GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Surgical Technician (certified or non-certified) assists the surgical center in the organization and daily function of the operating room in accordance with established federal, state and accreditation standards and facility policies and procedures. The technician assists the surgeons and nurses during surgical procedures by preparing operating rooms, sterilizing equipment, and handling instruments. In addition, the technician plays a vital role in maintaining a sterile environment, ensuring smooth flow of surgical operations and in delivering the highest standard of patient care available.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Fosters a positive and successful working environment, creating partnership with team members, leadership, and providers.
- Prepares the operating room for surgery by setting up equipment and ensuring a sterile environment.
- Sterilizes and maintains surgical instruments and equipment.
- Prepares patients for surgery by washing and disinfecting incision sites, positioning them on the operating table, and covering them with sterile drapes.
- Assists with patient transport to and from the operating room.
- Applies dressings and bandages after surgery.
- Passes instruments and supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants.
- Assists in inventory management and restocks room after procedure.
- Maintains accurate records of surgical procedures and supplies.
- Monitors and assesses operating room conditions.
- Participates in direct patient care including maintaining a clean, orderly, and safe environment.

Requirements
CORE COMPETENCIES
- Knowledge of up-to-date surgical technology, medical terminology and procedures.
- Knowledge and ability to create and maintain a sterile field.
- Knowledge of principles of aseptic practice in varying situations.
- Knowledge of safe care and handling of instrumentation.
- Knowledge of sterile processing standards and practices.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- High School diploma or equivalent, required.
- Minimum of two (2) years of operating room experience as a surgical technician/technologist.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
- Certification as a surgical technician
- Current Basic Life Support Certification (BLS)
