The Opportunity
Our Power & Energy Solutions Legal Team is looking to add a lawyer in Calgary to support regulatory requirements and applications in our Alberta Power business and broader Canadian electricity regulatory support. Reporting to Senior Legal Counsel & Manager in the Power & Energy Solutions and Corporate Development Law team in Canada.
We are seeking a dynamic Legal Counsel who has knowledge and experience in Canadian and Albertan environmental and utilities applications and permitting processes, and who possesses willingness to learn and a keen sense of teamwork. This individual has the proven skills, competencies and capacity to work with a variety of regulatory bodies and filings, identify legal risks and adapt to changing business unit priorities in the Alberta and Canadian electricity markets. Candidates should ideally have an understanding of the Alberta electricity market and regulatory issues affecting the power business Canada.
What you’ll do
Draft, review and file applications related to Power & Energy Solutions business unit activities in Alberta and other Canadian provinces, as required
Provide support and general advice to operations and commercial teams with respect to physical power generation assets
Monitor developments and provide legal support and general advice related to Albertan and Canadian electricity market regulations and reforms
Monitor developments and provide legal support related to Albertan and Canadian clean energy and carbon market regulations and reforms
Maintain an understanding of and relationships with all Business Units and/or operations groups involved in administration and operation of TC Energy’s physical power assets and commercial initiatives in Power & Energy Solutions
Minimum Qualifications
4-7 years’ experience in regulatory legal practice
LL.B, J.D. or equivalent from a recognized University
Active member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta or equivalent Canadian law society.
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with Canadian and provincial (Ontario & Alberta) electricity markets, power generation and power operational issues
Experience working with administrative tribunals such as the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC), Alberta Environmental Regulator and/or Canadian Energy Regulator
Experience making written and oral submissions and applications to administrative tribunals and/ or courts in Alberta or another Canadian province
Up to date knowledge of the changing Alberta Electricity market, including Restructured Energy Market transformation, AESO Market Rules and role of the AUC in changes to Market Rules.
This position requires candidates to:
Have current, valid authorization to work in Canada
Have current, valid authorization to travel internationally (including but not limited to Canada, US and Mexico)
Be part of an on-call rotation as Legal support representative to legal leadership during emergencies and/or critical incidents and provide emergency support as required
Successfully complete pre-employment Bankruptcy, Credit, Civil and Criminal background checks
