The Logistics Director will provide strategic leadership and direction for all inland transportation activities in coordination with warehouse operations across the U.S. This pivotal role is responsible for ensuring the efficient, safe, and reliable movement and storage of goods to support our business growth and customer commitments. The Logistics Director will drive the optimization of transportation networks, technology implementation, process improvements, and team performance, all while upholding regulatory compliance and fostering an innovative, safety-focused culture.
Job responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Strategic Leadership
• Develop, communicate, and execute on a comprehensive logistics strategy for US inland transportation and warehousing aligned with overall business objectives, balancing service quality, cost efficiency, and scalability for future growth.
• Continuously analyze market trends, regulations, and technology advancements to identify opportunities for risk mitigation, process improvement, and competitive differentiation.
• Serve as a high-level representative in partnerships with transportation carriers, 3PLs, and key suppliers, negotiating contracts and actively managing relationships to ensure best value and performance.
- Inland Transportation Management
• Oversee the selection, qualification, and ongoing performance management of carriers for all modes of inland transport (truckload, LTL, rail, intermodal), ensuring reliable, timely, and damage-free deliveries.
• Lead the development and implementation of route optimization, load planning, and freight consolidation strategies to achieve service and cost goals.
• Ensure effective utilization of Transportation Management Systems (TMS) for shipment execution, real-time tracking, carrier performance analytics, and freight payment processes.
- KPI management and Distribution Operations
• Develop annual logistics budgets and regularly monitor financial performance, implementing corrective actions to manage costs and achieve financial targets.
• Analyze freight spend, partnering with procurement and finance to deliver on cost-saving initiatives while maintaining service standards.
• Direct the operation of a national warehouse and distribution network, setting standards for inventory accuracy, order fulfillment, throughput, and space utilization.
• Establish, measure, and drive adherence to KPIs including on-time shipping, inventory turns, dock-to-stock time, and warehouse labor efficiency.
- Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement
• Lead cross-functional projects aimed at process improvement, cost reduction, and service enhancement through Lean, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies.
• Leverage data analytics to diagnose operational issues, drive root-cause analysis, and create action plans for corrective measures.
• Continuously review and update standard operating procedures and contingency planning to ensure business continuity amid disruptions (weather, supply chain shocks, labor issues, etc.).
- Compliance, Safety & Risk Management
• Ensure full compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local transportation regulations (including DOT, FMCSA, OSHA) and internal company policies.
• Implement and reinforce rigorous safety protocols within transportation and warehouse environments to minimize accidents, claims, and liabilities.
• Lead audits and risk assessments as needed, proactively addressing any identified gaps or vulnerabilities.
- People Leadership & Talent Development
• Build, motivate, and mentor a high-performance team of transportation leaders. Develop clear objectives and provide ongoing coaching and professional development opportunities.
• Foster a collaborative and solutions-oriented team culture, promoting open communication and accountability at all levels.
• Manage organizational change initiatives related to new technology, process realignment, or strategic shifts, ensuring effective adoption and minimal disruption.
- Collaboration and Communication
• Serve as the logistics subject matter expert, collaborating closely with Planning, warehouse, Procurement, Sales, Customer Service, Finance, and IT to align logistics operations with organizational goals and customer requirements.
• Prepare and present regular reports to executive leadership on logistics KPI trends, project statuses, risk assessments, and strategic recommendations.
Skills/Qualification:
• Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field (Master’s/MBA preferred).
• 15+ years of progressive experience in logistics/supply chain, with a strong record of leadership in inland transportation and warehouse management in the U.S.
• Experience implementing automation or robotics in distribution centers preferred.
• Industry-specific experience (e.g., retail, e-commerce, manufacturing, food & beverage) as relevant preferred.
• Deep understanding of US transportation regulations, carrier market dynamics, warehousing best practices, and safety standards.
• Strong technical proficiency with modern TMS and WMS platforms, automation technologies, and advanced analytics tools.
• Lean/Six Sigma certification preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, ERP, and advanced analytics platforms preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to lead large teams in a fast-paced, multi-site distribution environment.
• Excellent negotiation, relationship management, and conflict resolution skills.
• Analytical, strategic thinker with exceptional communication and organizational skills.
