Independence Plus has an immediate opening for a high-performing Controller to join our finance team as a strategic individual contributor. This position will work out of our Oak Brook, IL (DuPage County) office and is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic, hands-on environment, wants visibility at the executive level, and is ready to take full ownership of both core accounting operations, advanced financial modelling, and strategic data enablement.


Reporting directly to the CFO, you will lead critical month-end close activities, manage key accounting schedules, advanced forecasting tools, and business intelligence systems that support real-time decision-making. You will also provide oversight of a small, well-defined Accounts Payable function, mentoring team members as they grow. This role offers deep exposure to executive strategy and is a unique opportunity to grow as a well-rounded financial leader.


Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities


Accounting and Financial Operations (60%)

  • Lead month-end close activities ensuring GL accuracy and compliance with GAAP
  • Prepare and manage key accounting schedules, including payroll journals, accruals, prepaids, amortization, and depreciation
  • Build and maintain financial models for cashflow forecasting, working capital management, growth planning, and cost analysis
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with AP, AR, and revenue cycle teams to ensure aligned financial operations and seamless month-end close
  • Maintain strong controls and optimize workflows
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements with commentary and key driver analyses
  • Prepare and maintain budgets and cash forecasts
  • Other duties as assigned


Strategic Data and Financial Insights (20%)

  • Design, build, and manage ETLs and dashboards within Domo, integrating data from multiple systems into a centralized data lake
  • Develop real-time reporting tools, KPIs, alerts, and automated workflows to enhance decision-making, detect issues early, and improve organizational efficiency
  • Partner closely with the CFO to provide self-service insights and analytics that drive strategic planning and business growth


Process Improvement and Systems Optimization (19%)

  • Identify opportunities to further streamline close, reporting, and budgeting processes and implement scalable financial workflows
  • Recommend and document best practices to enhance consistency, accuracy, and automation across the finance function
  • Assist in optimizing ERP and financial planning tools to support the company’s evolving needs


Audit and Tax Support (1%)

  • Coordinate with external auditors and tax preparers by preparing requested schedules, selections, and documentation to      facilitate timely compliance and filings

Requirements

  • This position requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • 7 to 10+ years in accounting or finance, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role
  • Strong GAAP and internal controls experience
  • Familiar with healthcare, HME, or high-regulation environments
  • Strong systems thinker with demonstrated success streamlining workflows
  • Comfortable leading both people and projects
  • Proficiency in Excel and ERP systems such as NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or QuickBooks
  • Hands-on experience with data analytics platforms like Domo, including ETL development or similar workflows
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams while providing clear guidance and mentorship
  • Solutions-oriented mindset with high attention to detail and a passion for process improvement
