TEGNA is looking for a dynamic, business-minded Group HR Director (Northeast) for a great opportunity supporting an innovative media company. The Group HR Director leads the HR function for one of TEGNA’s six regions, including approximately 700 employees across television stations. This includes strategic partnership with station leadership and alignment with regional revenue and content teams, as well as leadership, performance management, talent strategy, culture and effective employee relations. The Group HR Director will be instrumental in leading a high-performing culture and must provide quality leadership to the leaders across the region.
The successful candidate must live in the region they will support. The Northeast region is comprised of the following markets: Washington, D.C (WUSA), Norfolk (WVEC), Buffalo (WGRZ), Harrisburg (WPMT), Scranton/Wilkes Barre (WNEP), Hartford (WTIC), Portland/Bangor (WLBZ/WCSH).
Responsibilities:
- Lead the HR function for a regional group of seven stations.
- Handle complex and/or sensitive day-to-day people issues.
- Strengthen management capabilities by providing guidance and coaching to managers and employees on the full range of people issues including employee advocacy/engagement, employee relations, performance management, career development, talent assessment, acquisition and retention and workplace investigations.
- Serve as a strategic partner to regional leadership peers, aligning human capital needs with company objectives.
- Anticipate and respond to changing business needs and serve as a thought partner to the business.
- Influence lasting change in assigned businesses by serving as a change advocate on company-wide strategies and initiatives.
- Champion employee and organizational development, including talent development, succession planning, performance management programs, skills gap analysis, and individual career development
- Work collaboratively with the broader Human Resources team on special projects and initiatives and best practice sharing.
- Effectively communicate TEGNA's value proposition to external candidates and serve as a brand ambassador for the company.
- React productively to change, effectively work at an operational level with multiple stakeholders, and act quickly and confidently under pressure.
- Understand and adhere to local, state and federal employment-related laws.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field; master’s degree strongly preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive, senior-level HR leadership experience in a multi-market, matrixed organization, with significant scope across multiple business units or regions.
- Proven track record of leading and influencing senior executives at a regional or enterprise level, shaping strategy and driving execution on complex, company-wide initiatives.
- Demonstrated success navigating high-stakes, high-impact people matters—including organizational change, senior leader transitions, large-scale performance management, and sensitive employee relations—while protecting business continuity and culture.
- Expert relationship-builder with the ability to operate as a trusted advisor, thought partner, and change agent to regional leadership teams.
- Evidence of measurable business impact through talent strategy, organizational design, leadership development, and succession planning at scale.
- Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-visibility environment with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
- Comprehensive knowledge of state and federal employment laws and ability to apply them strategically across multiple jurisdictions. #LI-MS1
