Internship provides field experience for Master of Social Work students whose program requires such practicum experience. The
Homeless Bureau's Behavioral Health Department sustains a clinically appropriate continuum of care for clients impaired from
mental illness and substance abuse, including maintaining communication with collateral treaters with similar training. The interns
engage in crisis intervention, assessment and referral for a range of essential community services ( e.g., partial hospitalization, dual diagnosis day treatment, etc.). The continuum decreases risk within the shelters for clients and also decreases inpatient admissions
and lengths of stay during admission. The goal of the Master of Social Work internship is to prepare the intern to develop competencies in social work practice while
working with homeless guests who are in various phases of recovery.
Learning Outcomes:
Under guidance and direct supervision of licensed clinical social workers, the intern will learn to:
1) Provide psychosocial assessment and referral services to shelter guests;
2) Identify high-risk behaviors and provide crisis intervention and ongoing clinical support;
3) Provide psychosocial assessment, clinical intervention and care coordination services;
4) Particiapate in screening guests for admission to higher levels of care;
5) Participate in the development and monitoring of guests' individual service plans;
6) Collaborate with external social sservices agencies and act as liaison to hospitals and other inpatient/outpatient programs Qualifications Provides field experience for master of social work students whose program requires such practicum experience.
