Position Overview:
The Director of Logistics & Inventory Control plays a crucial role in overseeing the logistics operations, inventory control, and Free Trade Zone (FTZ) compliance functions of the company. This leadership position is responsible for optimizing transportation strategies, managing vendor relationships, directing fleet operations, ensuring inventory accuracy, and driving continuous process improvement initiatives. The Director will work closely with senior management and cross-functional teams to deliver cost-effective, efficient, and compliant logistics solutions while enhancing the overall supply chain performance.
This role requires strategic oversight, strong leadership capabilities, and the ability to manage a diverse team while focusing on cost control, efficiency, and operational excellence. The Director of Logistics & Inventory Control is the go-to expert in logistics performance and will lead key initiatives in optimizing freight management, vendor relations, and inventory control practices.
**Note: This position is on-site in Loris, SC.**
Key Responsibilities:
1. Logistics Strategy & Operations
- Develop and execute strategic logistics plans that ensure cost-effective and timely inbound and outbound transportation.
- Direct the annual ocean freight RFQ process, negotiate favorable contracts, and ensure vendor compliance.
- Manage transportation budgets and ensure cost-effective solutions while meeting delivery timelines.
2. Team Leadership & Management
- Lead a team of logistics professionals, including logistics staff and inventory auditors, ensuring the team meets performance goals and adheres to company standards.
- Conduct regular performance reviews and provide ongoing coaching to team members to foster a high-performance culture.
- Establish clear expectations, provide guidance, and promote continuous improvement across the logistics team.
3. Vendor Management & Relationship Building
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with logistics service providers, including carriers and customs brokers.
- Evaluate vendor performance, resolve escalated issues, and establish clear performance metrics to track service levels.
- Negotiate contracts and monitor vendor compliance to ensure optimal service delivery.
4. Fleet Management & Optimization
- Oversee the operation of DMA’s fleet, including trucks, chassis, trailers, and flatbeds.
- Develop and implement efficient pick-up and delivery schedules, optimizing routes and resource utilization.
- Monitor fleet performance and implement improvements to reduce costs and enhance service reliability.
5. Free Trade Zone (FTZ) Compliance
- Provide strategic oversight of all FTZ activities, ensuring strict compliance with regulations and timely reporting to Customs and Border Protection.
- Collaborate with the FTZ Coordinator to maintain internal audit processes and resolve any issues related to FTZ operations.
6. Inventory Control & Optimization
- Direct inventory control operations, ensuring the accurate maintenance of inventory levels and minimizing discrepancies.
- Supervise the Inventory Control Manager and team of inventory auditors, driving accountability and performance.
- Implement regular cycle counts, monitor inventory trends, and address issues promptly to maintain accuracy.
7. Freight Analysis & Reporting
- Generate detailed weekly reports on freight rates and projections, providing insights to senior management for decision-making.
- Analyze freight performance data and develop actionable recommendations to improve cost and efficiency.
- Prepare and present ad-hoc freight quotes for shipments, ensuring accurate pricing and competitive rates.
8. Process Improvement & Cost Control
- Continuously monitor logistics metrics (e.g., on-time delivery, cost efficiency, inventory accuracy) to identify areas for process improvement.
- Lead initiatives to enhance logistics performance, reduce costs, and improve service delivery.
- Develop and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for logistics operations and take action to meet or exceed targets.
9. Documentation & Regulatory Compliance
- Establish and maintain accurate documentation for all logistics activities, ensuring audit readiness.
- Ensure full compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations related to logistics, transportation, and inventory.
- Lead internal audits and implement corrective actions as necessary to meet compliance standards.
10. Strategic Planning & Senior Management Communication
- Work closely with senior management to develop and present logistics strategies that align with company objectives.
- Provide regular updates and strategic recommendations regarding logistics performance, trends, and opportunities for improvement.
- Act as a key advisor to senior management on logistics-related matters.
11. Additional Responsibilities
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Reporting Structure:
- Reports directly to the VP of Supply Chain.
- This position has direct reports.
Requirements
Key Requirements:
- Experience: Minimum of 5-10 years in logistics and supply chain management, with at least 2 years of experience in FTZ operations. Proven experience in managing complex logistics operations and optimizing transportation and inventory processes.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, or a related field; or equivalent experience.
- Skills: Strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Access. Strong communication and interpersonal abilities, with the capacity to influence and lead cross-functional teams.
- Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of logistics, transportation, inventory control, and FTZ regulations. Experience with freight analysis, vendor management, and fleet optimization.
- Technology: Proficiency in warehouse management systems, order tracking software, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Physical Requirements:
This role primarily involves office-based work with occasional visits to logistics sites, warehouses, and transportation facilities.
- Mobility: Ability to move between office, warehouse, and logistics environments as needed.
- Sitting: Prolonged periods of sitting while working at a computer or attending meetings.
- Standing and Walking: Occasional standing and walking during site visits, fleet inspections, and warehouse walkthroughs.
- Lifting and Carrying: Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds occasionally (e.g., logistics documents, inventory items).
- Vision and Hearing: Adequate visual and auditory acuity to review documents, analyze logistics data, and communicate effectively in meetings.
- Work Environment: Exposure to typical office and warehouse environments, which may include moderate noise levels and use of equipment.
Travel Requirements:
Occasional travel for site visits, meetings with vendors, or logistics events (up to 10% travel).
