Job Summary

The nursing tech is responsible for routine nursing procedures and certain tasks related to patient care
under the supervision of a nurse within a nursing unit of the hospital.

Qualifications
1. Graduated from high school, or GED preferred
2. Participation in continuing education programs
3. Graduated from accredited nurse’s aide program or prior experience as nurse aide
4. On the job training, if necessary
5. BLS certification


Job Relationships:
1. Directly responsible to the staff nurse, charge nurse, Nurse Manager/House Supervisor, CNO
2. Workers supervised: None
Physical Demands
Note: “Occasionally” = 1% to 33% of the workday; “Frequently” = 34% to 66%; “Continuously” = 67% to 100%. This may
also be described as performance once every 3 minutes = “occasional”; once every 1 ½ to 3 minutes= “Frequent; once every
1 ½ minutes to continuous work = “continuous”.
Standing /Walking- continuous. The NT is on his/her feet the majority of the shift to perform
direct and indirect patient care as well as completing other assigned functions of their job.
Sitting- frequent. The NT is required, at times to sit at various desks height for charting and
doing tasks such as in-services and computer activities.
Bending- frequent. Bending is required in most job activities related to patient care. The NT
should be able to maneuver in small areas, such as plugging in electrical equipment in
emergency situations.
Climbing/Reaching- occasional. The NT should be able to climb a small ladder or step stool,
when placing supplies on storage shelves, etc. The NT should be able to reach in order to place
supplies or equipment on storage shelves.
Push/Pull- frequent. The NT often performs push/pull motion when transporting patients and
moving equipment on various floor surfaces.
Handing/Lifting- 0-50 lbs; frequent; 50-100 lbs; occasional. The NT may need to lift and help
handle objects from 1-300 lbs. Assistance in moving patients and push/pull activity is frequently
done.
Manual Dexterity Hands- Simple grasp- continuous.
Firm grasp- frequent
Fine manipulation- frequent
Feet – Standing and walking continuous and /or frequent
Both fine and gross motor skills are needed in areas such as writing, adjustment of equipment,
and computer skills. Foot controls may be used with some equipment.
Speaking/ Hearing/ Seeing- continuous.
Speaking- able to communicate verbally with co-workers, patients, and visitors.
Hearing- able to hear normal communication with/without correction.
Seeing- vision functional with/without corrective lens.


Patient Population
The Medical/Surgical nursing unit has a 26-bed capacity. Typically, the patient population is a mix of
various medical/surgical patients between the ages of 13 years old to over 90 years of age.
