Position Summary
We are seeking a hands-on and detail-oriented Electronics Hardware Sustaining Engineer to support and enhance the performance, reliability, and manufacturability of our existing electronic products. This role is critical in bridging engineering and operations, ensuring that released hardware designs continue to meet customer expectations, quality standards, and evolving compliance requirements throughout the product lifecycle.
Essential Responsibilities
- Investigate and resolve field and production issues related to electronic hardware (i.e. component failures, design anomalies, test escapes).
- Perform root cause analysis and implement engineering changes (ECOs) to improve reliability and manufacturability.
- Support production line troubleshooting, including test failures and yield improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with supply chain and manufacturing teams to address component obsolescence or shortages through requalification or redesign.
- Maintain and update design documentation, including schematics, Bill of Materials (BOMs), and Printed Circuit Boardy (PCB) layout files.
- Work with quality and service teams to track and analyze warranty returns and failure trends.
- Conduct Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) reviews and maintain compliance with product safety and Electromagnetic Compatibility/Interference (EMC/EMI) requirements.
- Assist in the validation of alternate suppliers, production test updates, and cost reduction efforts.
- Actively participate in product transfers, revision updates, and new production runs.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Travel requirements: The role requires travel up to 40% of the time, including monthly visits to Marlborough, Massachusetts.
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or related field.
- 3+ years of experience in electronics hardware design or sustaining/support roles.
- Strong debugging skills using lab equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, etc.).
- Proficient in reading and editing schematics and PCB layouts using tools such as Altium Designer, KiCAD, or OrCAD.
- Solid understanding of analog/digital circuits, power supplies, and microcontroller-based systems.
- Experience with ECO process, BOM management, and change control systems.
Other Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with Design for Manufacturability/Testability (DFM/DFT) principles and supporting high-mix, low-volume production environments.
- Knowledge of regulatory standards (e.g., UL, FCC, CE) and experience supporting compliance testing.
- Experience with component obsolescence management, vendor requalification, and cost-down engineering.
- Basic understanding of firmware, embedded systems, or system-level integration is a plus.
