Job Description
The Site Reliability Engineer is a position in the Site Reliability Engineering track. An employee holding this position is an engineer with some professional experience in the domain of platform performance, usage and implementation of monitoring processes/tools, and in reviewing performance aspects of code and monitoring output. The SRE will be working closely with the Software Architects, other members of the SRE Team, internal and external Performance Teams, and is expected to be able to apply professional experience of SRE concepts, or aspire to this career path. A “can do” mindset and “out-of-the-box” thinking will be prerequisites.
Responsibilities
Contributing to the capacity, performance and reliability of an OpenBet platform
Comfortably using the monitoring and observability processes, technologies and tools. Drives issues to resolution quickly.
Review, sign-off and feedback in solution design choices, following agreed architecture and performance excellence principles
Perform critical reviews of database schema and code for performance efficiency
Identify and address performance anomalies and their potential causes using monitoring tools/graphs
Contribute to the delivery plans of SRE objectives
Act as contact point for the day to day performance-related and reliability issues with the customer / partner
Participate in the preparation for Major Events
Contribute to performance test profiling, and supporting Performance Tests
Escalation point for complicated performance related matters
Escalation point and proactive responder for critical and business impacting incidents
Provide technical coaching for less experienced engineers
Support the recruitment process of technical resources
Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or information systems from a well-regarded university;
5+ years of combined commercial experience in Software Development, Performance Engineering and/or SRE roles.
Demonstrable coding talent in at least one major language (TCL, Java, J2EE, C, C++, C#, Python or PHP);
Working knowledge of Web technologies and internet protocols (SOAP, WS-*, ReST, XML, HTTP, TCP/IP);
Strong fundamental programming skills (data structures, algorithms);
Experience in advance Database design/optimization (any vendor);
Experience in setting up and using observability tools (eg Grafana, InfluxDB, Prometheus, Datadog etc)
Experience in Performance Testing on distributed systems or microservice architectures
Experience in reviewing functionalities spanning across multiple systems for performance improvements, reliability and extensibility, including feature implementation reviews and general platform improvements
Experience in infrastructure, layout, scaling and capable of assessing the performance of a platform both in real-time and through interpreting long-term trend data
Ability to break up problem space and design solutions of moderate complexity spanning across multiple functions/systems/integrations and turn requirements into solid tasks
Experience in leading high-priority, complicated, incident related problems using monitoring and observability principles, and be able to contribute to solutions
Able to assess the relative strengths and suitability of different solutions to various performance issues with an appreciation of architectural limitations/abilities
Experience in the performance, capacity, and scaling for a platform or preparation of a live environment
Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken;
It would also be great to see these skills/experiences as well:
Familiarity developing on Linux;
Development skills in TCL or any other Scripting language;
Web development skills React, HTML, HTML5 and CSS;
Experience with Jenkins or other CI tools;
Good working knowledge of Git or other version control systems;
Scripting skills: Bash, Perl, Python, and JavaScript;
Experience with Cloud Technologies (eg AWS, Azure)
Experience in developing software that interfaces with other 3rd party systems;
Ability to learn new technologies quickly
Ability to consistently deliver and contribute to timescales
