Job Description:
· Maintain the ED trauma book, making copies daily.
· Running/printing reports through EPIC, (Patient Census & ED Activity Log).
· Analyzing patient data to identify trauma patients in EPIC.
· Printing and organizing patient records based on inclusion criteria.
· Operating and maintaining printing machines and/or scanners to produce high-quality documents and digital images.
· Prepare documents for scanning, including removing staples and organizing materials.
· Maintaining and organizing patient records into piles for distribution to Registrars.
· Request autopsy reports from the medical examiner’s office for all trauma patients that expire in the hospital.
· Maintain the most recent copies of policy and procedure guidelines for the trauma registry/IDPH/NTDB.
· Assisting with maintaining supplies and equipment for the unit.
· Create reports and reference guides as requested.
· Maintain confidentiality of patient information in compliance with HIPAA law and hospital policy.
· Maintains quality results by following and enforcing standards.
· Other duties as requested/assigned by trauma registrars or trauma coordinator.
Qualifications and Skills
· Strong office technology skills
· Knowledge of HIPPA and client confidentiality laws
· Solid written and verbal communication skills
· Detail orientated
· Proficient in medical terminology
· Computer skills in word processing (Word, Excel, etc.) and data management.
· Demonstrates strong analytical skills.
· Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize requests and assignments.
· Self-directed with initiative to function independently as needed.
· Ability to read and interpret written and transcribed documents in the medical record
· Demonstrates ability to understand anatomy and disease processes along with medical terminology to identify and abstract medical data from paper to electronic medical records
Education and Experience Requirements:
· High school diploma or GED equivalent
· 1-2 years of experience in abstracting data from medical records, preferably Emergency Department/Trauma related
· Medical terminology course
· Anatomy & physiology course
· College course work in healthcare or related fields is desirable with preference to a health information management student
