Full Time

Under general supervision, performs maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment, off road equipment, snow removal equipment and the City’s vehicle fleet for the Municipal Services Department Central Garage. Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and performs repairs on fleet, including but not limited to hydraulic, suspension, exhaust, electrical, cooling, fuel, electrical and component repairs. Fabricates repairs and maintains a wide variety of equipment constructed of metal including sheet metal repairs and fabrication. Instructs Parts Clerk on parts required to repair vehicle/equipment. Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and performs major engine and driveline repairs and rebuilding as directed. Performs welding, brazing, soldering, and cutting utilizing oxy-fuel and plasma arc cutting systems. Operates vehicles and equipment to aid in diagnostics; picks up and delivers vehicles and equipment. Diagnoses and performs emergency field service work on disabled equipment and performs field service work on all equipment that cannot be transported to the main shop. Performs call-out repairs 24 hours a day, seven days a week as required and must be able to work as needed for snow removal call-out and emergency vehicle repair. Must furnish own tools.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED; and five (5) years related job experience with demonstrable skills in general automotive maintenance and repair, heavy machinery maintenance and repair and fire equipment maintenance and repair; or any combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Automotive Trade School or equivalent certification preferred. Must have or be able to obtain within six (6) months a Valid State Commercial Driver’s License – Class A with air brake endorsement without K restriction. May be required to obtain a Missouri Vehicle Inspection License, ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications, EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) training or ability to obtain. Must have or be able to obtain within six (6) months an R-12/R-134a refrigerant certification. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six (6) months of hire.

Knowledge of: Methods of repair of a broad range of vehicles and equipment; hand tools, shop equipment and computerized test equipment including the automotive and construction industry; maintenance and repair of emergency equipment; fabrication, construction, maintenance and repair of sheet metal and steel parts and components; various electrical systems of gasoline and diesel engines; standard practices, equipment and tools of the automotive and equipment mechanical trade; methods and techniques of brazing, soldering and cutting utilizing oxy-fuel and plasma arc cutting systems; basic principles of record keeping; shop mathematics; occupational hazards and standard safety; hydraulics, pneumatics and computer operation systems; working knowledge of EPA regulations and hazardous waste materials.

Skilled in: Operating tools and equipment related to the shop operations, including, but not limited to, presses, jacks, lifts, VOM meters, computer scan and diagnostic systems, grinding equipment, and welding equipment (TIG, MIG, ARC and Aluminum); computer operations, quality control, typing and safety practices.

Ability to: Read, interpret, and comprehend automotive manuals; interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form; and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Physical Demands: Frequently required to sit and talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to walk or stand for long periods. Must have adequate hearing ability to diagnose mechanical problems in a loud environment. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. Ability to lift and/or move up to 75 lbs.

Typical Working Conditions: Garage atmosphere, some outdoor work required – conditions include extreme heat and cold, working with solvents, oils, and greases. The air quality often includes internal combustion exhaust gasses and emissions, chemical fumes, and petroleum products. Employee sometimes works near moving mechanical parts and equipment.
Regular Working Hours 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
