Job Summary
Functioning in the Emergency Department setting, the EMT is responsible to follow physician orders regarding care of the patient(s). Provides direct and indirect patient care within their scope of practice under the direction of a RN or physician.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides direct patient care in accordance with the laws governing Idaho EMTs with the standards set by the Idaho Emergency Medical Services Bureau, Minidoka Memorial Hospital Emergency Physicians, and Minidoka Memorial Hospital Policies and Procedures manual.
- Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient’s age.
- Provides care appropriate to condition and age of patient, including pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population.
- Provides patient care that meets the psychosocial and physical needs of the patient.
- Uses triage process to ensure timely and appropriate care to patients. Accurately assigns triage categories.
- Measures and records temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration, pain level, height, and weight.
- Ability to apply cardiac monitoring and pulse oximetry.
- Ability to perform waived testing (point-of-care testing) per Clinical Laboratory and the department’s policies and procedures. Communicates results to supervising RN.
- Ability to perform ECG electrocardiogram per department protocols and polices.
- Ability to establish intravenous access and collect blood specimens per department specific and Clinical Laboratory protocols and policies.
- Ability to administer supplement oxygen.
- Assists with patient admissions, discharge, and transfers.
- Provides general patient care such as positioning patients, lifting and turning patients applying/utilizing special equipment, assisting in use of bedpan, commode, and ambulating patients.
- Demonstrates the ability to assist physicians with procedures in the Emergency Department.
- Answers patients’ call lights, anticipates patient’s needs and makes rounds of assigned patients.
- Transports patients to various departments for ordered tests and/or procedures.
- Observes patient’s mental and physical conditions, reports any changes to supervising RN.
- Ability to accurately document patient care in the EMR including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses, and assessment of changes.
- Knowledgeable of sterile techniques, infection prevention, and control procedures.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Interacts professionally with patient and family.
- Participates as a member of the Code team within the department and hospital.
- Performs various department clerical tasks. Ability to take messages, direct calls, and answer telephone calls. Communicate messages to physicians and RNs.
- Navigate the intranet to access Synergi, MCN, call schedule, HealthStream, OneSource, email, and various other programs.
- Retrieve prehospital ECG from email to print and provide copy to the ED provider.
- Operate computers, facsimile machines, scanners, and photocopiers.
- Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
- Participates in performance improvement activities.
- Communicates in a clear and concise manner to RNs and providers.
- Assists as assigned with stocking of supplies and materials.
- Assists in cost containment through appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- Certified as an EMT 2011
- Responsible to maintain EMT certification, by meeting the minimum requirements for continued certification and recertification
- Current BLS Certification
Preferred Requirements
- 2-3 years of relevant experience
Physical Requirements
Perceive the nature of sounds by the ear, express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word, perceive characteristics of objects through the eyes, extend arms and hands in any direction, seize, hold, grasp, turn, or otherwise work with hands, pick, pinch, or otherwise work with fingers, perceive such attributes of objects or materials as size, shape, temperature, or texture; and stoop, kneel crouch, and crawl. Must be able to lift 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting, carrying pushing, and pulling of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Continuous walking and standing. Must be able to identify, match, and distinguish colors.
