Position Objective:

The Financial Counselor provides one-on-one short-term and emergency financial counseling and/or long-term planning to help clients become financially stable, organized, and self-sufficient on their path to financial independence and prosperity.  The full-time financial counseling professional will focus on budgeting to help eligible clients understand and prioritize their expenses, debts, and saving opportunities, as well as to establish or improve their credit scores and establish or repair credit histories.  They also lead financial workshops, assist with tax and public benefit applications, and support individuals with specific needs, such as child support obligations. This role includes tracking client progress and maintaining accurate records in internal databases.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide one-on-one in-person and remote financial counseling and coaching to clients, including budgeting and expense reduction, debt prioritization, credit building, and various other topics.
  • Create and conduct classroom style workshops on various financial topics to groups of clients.
  • Refer clients to external legal, financial, tax, and other partners for additional assistance.
  • Enter client-specific data into internal databases (Salesforce etc.).
  • Help members apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax benefits that they are eligible for.
  • Meet with non-custodial parents who struggle to meet their child support obligations and offer support and information on making modifications and offer referrals to the NYC Office of Child Support Services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in finance, economics, or a business-related field, or an associate’s degree with a certification in financial counseling (CUNY Consumer and Personal Finance, etc.), AFCPE, CFP, and CFA.
  • 3-5 years of experience providing individualized financial counseling or coaching to individuals of various backgrounds including low-income communities, immigrants, people in crisis, justice involved individuals, veterans, individuals receiving public benefits, youth ages 16-24 years old.
  • Excellent communication skills – ability to instruct in Spanish or additional foreign languages preferred.
  • Proven experience conducting group presentations, providing feedback, and one-on-one coaching.
  • Proven expertise in personal finance strategies, credit- building, debt reduction and financial planning.
  • Experience creating curricula and facilitating training sessions.
  • Background in education, banking, finance, community/economic development, or social work.

Salary Range: $60-$65K
