About This Opportunity
The Floor Manager provides technical support for research activities and oversees shared lab spaces at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience. This includes managing scientific equipment, delivering safety inductions and training, and ensuring compliance with UQ policies and regulatory requirements.
In this role, you will assist with the implementation of Health, Safety and Wellness (HSW) plans, conduct safety inspections, and maintain laboratory procedures and risk documentation. You will be part of a team supporting research laboratories and specialist facilities such as PC3 laboratories, PC2 insectary, radiation safety, animal use oversight, research chemistry, drugs and poisons, and/or support for the central sterilising facility and consumable store staff. Our team members bring expertise in areas such as immunology, cell biology, microscopy, ethics, and biosecurity. We are currently seeking a new member with experience in flow cytometry and/or unsealed radiation sources to complement our team.
Key responsibilities will include:
Oversee building, floor, and equipment access; deliver inductions; monitor training records; assist with compliance; and advise on hazardous chemical legislation in coordination with the HSW Manager.
Procure supplies, maintain inventories (chemical, cryo-storage, assets), manage equipment installation and movement, coordinate servicing and repairs, and conduct training on specialised equipment and techniques.
Support compliance with imports/exports, Dangerous Goods, IATA, Biosecurity, OGTR, and ethics requirements; assist researchers with documentation and liaise with experts on PC2/PC3, biosecurity, biosafety, radiation, and human and animal ethics.
Perform routine audits and stocktakes, manage lab maintenance tasks, support consumables and equipment procurement, and build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Oversight the welfare and use of animals in the laboratory.
Conduct workplace audits and inspections, develop and monitor corrective action plans, and advise staff on risk assessments. Support the implementation of HSW systems and processes, and deliver local training as needed.
Provide guidance and training on HSW compliance, including PPE use, waste management, chemical storage, biological hazards, and radioactive materials. Conduct lab safety inspections and collaborate with other managers to ensure consistency and improvement.
Serve as Floor Warden, First Aider, and Work Health and Safety Coordinator (WHSC), contributing to a safe and compliant work environment.
Act as a liaison between research staff and the Institute’s Infrastructure and HSW Managers, including providing after-hours contact on a rostered basis.
Contribute to the Institute and University’s strategic and operational goals through active participation in committees and project teams.

About You
BSc (Hons) and 3-5 years of experience in a research laboratory, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training, or
Ability to work under broad direction, in an efficient and well-organised manner, exercise independent judgement, meet deadlines, follow tasks through to completion and undertake complex problem solving.
Demonstrated ability to apply corporate procedures and policies existing and novel situations.
Motivated to support laboratory researchers in a service role.
Extensive experience in at least one of the following areas: immunology, virology, bacteriology, molecular biology techniques, unsealed sources of radiation, WHS in a laboratory environment
Knowledge and ability to interpret and apply current WHS, OGTR and Biosecurity legislative requirements
Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of stakeholders, including research staff and students
Demonstrated experience in a commitment to excellence in OH&S and client service
Effective written and oral communication skills
Detailed knowledge of laboratory equipment used in immunology, molecular biology, microbiology and/or cell biology such as flow cytometry, imaging, or real time PCR
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia. Specific immunisations are recommended.
