System Phlebotomy SupervisorThis individual will supervise, and participate in the performance of procedures that are in the scope of phlebotomy services. This includes oversight of all phlebotomy functions at all Bronson Laboratory Service centers and accounts ensuring sound technical standards, proper job methods and outstanding patient service. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 3-5years of clinical laboratory experience minimum required
- ASCP Phlebotomy certification required ( must be completed within 1 year of hire)
- Requires that the individual have good manual dexterity, ability to operate a computer keyboard and instrument function controls
- Must be available all shifts to ensure adequate staffing, performance competence and knowledge of all phlebotomy employees
- Work which produces levels of mental/visual fatigue which are typical of jobs that perform a wide variety of duties with frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines. Work may include the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT up to 40 percent of the time.
- Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (i.e., 20 pounds or less) and assisting with heavier tasks such as assisting in lifting and moving patients. Minor straining or fatiguing positions must be assumed, and some fatiguing physical motions are required.
- Acts as a liaison with inpatient and outpatient care areas and facilities.
- Organizes work flow in a manner which assures efficiency, increasing productivity, and accuracy.
- Schedules and allocates phlebotomy personnel to work inpatient and outpatient areas as workload dictates and assures adequate coverage for all shifts.
- Supervisor will participate in the hiring processes of new phlebotomists by reviewing applications, conducting interviews, and candidate selection.
- Orientates, ensures proper training and documents the competency of new employees- meets weekly with new hires throughout the training process.
- Performs employee performance evaluations and employee ongoing development and coaching.
- Consults with Phlebotomy Manager and Human Resources on an immediate basis as personnel problems arise. Provides coaching, training and discipline as needed.
- Oversees and maintains a proper inventory of departmental laboratory supplies working with Purchasing, Vendors and Distribution Center as needed to ensure adequate pricing, availability and accessibility of supplies are maintained.
- Ensures that all Bronson safety policies and procedures are in place and enforced.
- Coordinates any specialty collections for Nursing Homes, Clinics or Centers where phlebotomy staff are sent to collect samples.
- Employee Evaluations yearly and quarterly touch base meetings with all direct reports
- Develops personal and departmental goals for the team, and implements plans to meet those goals
- Demonstrates leadership excellence and commitment to ongoing professional and personal development.
- Leads team huddles, actively participates and helps to facilitate team meetings
- Engages in the development of the Phlebotomy Newsletter
- Represents the Phlebotomy Team in partnership with other departments for improvement work
- Facilitates team coaching and “crucial conversations” between employees- helping them to develop their problem solving and communication skills.
- Communicates with the team regularly face to face, over the phone or electronically as needed.
- Helps to maintain up to date team procedures.
- Performs service recovery, using “AAA “
- Works with leaders from other departments to continually improve the quality, service and cost initiatives involved with phlebotomy.
- Implements continuous improvement strategies across the system, working to reduce error and improve quality, service and be efficient with cost.
- Serves on laboratory committees in the areas of QC, safety and others as necessary.
- Rounds regularly to all locations
- Performs phlebotomy duties and supervises others in the techniques utilized to collect patient samples. These include such things as throat culture collection, venipuncture, face mask fit testing, chain of custody collections
- Participates in the evaluation of new phlebotomy devices as they become available
- Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned by management.
- Driving your own vehicle on a regularly scheduled basis to perform business on behalf of Bronson is required for this position and will require successfully pass of MVR check after an offer of employment has been made but prior to the employee’s start date. Proof of valid auto insurance on that vehicle that will be driven while on duty for Bronson is required. It is the employee’s responsibility to submit auto insurance renewals before current coverage expires to their supervisor. It is also the employee’s responsibility to update their auto insurance coverage with Bronson if a different vehicle will be driven to perform business on behalf of Bronson.
