Assistant Professor in Biological Anthropology - Tenure Track

Tulane University

Office

New Orleans, LA

Full Time

Description

The Department of Anthropology at Tulane University invites applications for a full-time-tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2026. We seek a biological anthropologist specializing in the analysis of human skeletal remains, especially those recovered from archaeological contexts. Regional focus is open. While expertise in areas such as disease, demography, violence, and migration in past populations is particularly valued, we also welcome applicants who apply laboratory-based methods such as microbiome research, ancient DNA and proteomics, and stable isotopic analyses.

The successful candidate will complement our department's strengths and actively contribute to our interdisciplinary research and teaching initiatives. Specifically, we envision this position as a bridge both within anthropology and across the liberal arts and sciences. We want our chosen candidate to strengthen our department's thematic concentration in the body, health, and medicine, but we also seek candidates who would contribute to departmental themes such as critical perspectives on race, gender, and sexuality, ecology and the environment, indigeneity, colonialism, and language, and religion, urban economy and politics of the state.

Courses may include Introduction to Biological Anthropology; Human Osteology; Bones, Bodies and Disease; Forensic Anthropology, and specialized courses related to the candidate's research. The teaching load is 2:2. Our department values engaged teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate (including PhD) levels. The successful candidate is also expected to bring a set of technical skills, run a successful lab, and pursue a top-tier research agenda. The start date for the position is July 1, 2026.

Qualifications

Ph.D. or equivalent degree in anthropology at the time employment begins. Successful candidates are expected to have demonstrated potential for excellence in research and have a dedicated interest in high-quality teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
