Join a dynamic and dedicated Cybersecurity team within the ITS Network and Security group, where your expertise will directly protect critical University systems and data.

As Senior Cybersecurity Analyst, you’ll play a key role in monitoring, maintaining, and improving the University’s security posture. You’ll lead the identification and response to potential threats, coordinate risk assessments, ensure compliance with policies and standards, and manage key security systems such as endpoint protection, SIEM, firewalls, and vulnerability management tools.

This role offers variety—from investigating incidents and guiding best practices to driving awareness initiatives and collaborating with internal staff and our trusted cybersecurity partner. If you're passionate about proactive defence and continuous improvement in the ever-evolving threat landscape, we’d love to hear from you.

This is a full-time position (37.5 hours per week) based at our Hillcrest Campus, with a salary of up to $124,038 per year, depending on the knowledge, skills, and experience the successful candidate brings to the role.

For more information on the role please see the position description. For a confidential conversation about the role, please contact Dougal Mair, Associate Director of Networks, Security and Assurance, dougal.mair@waikato.ac.nz. You’re an experienced cybersecurity professional with a sharp eye for risk, a passion for protection, and a drive to stay ahead of evolving threats. With at least 5 years in the field and a degree in Computer Science (or equivalent experience), you bring deep technical knowledge, hands-on experience with security systems and frameworks, and a proactive mindset. You're also certified—or working toward certification—in industry-recognised standards such as CompTIA Security+, SSCP, CISM, or CISSP.

You understand how to communicate complex ideas clearly, influence others, and work collaboratively across teams. You’re confident navigating ISO, NIST, and NZISM standards, and ideally have experience with Microsoft 365 and Fortinet security products. Whether you're investigating incidents, advising on best practices, or fine-tuning defences, you bring curiosity, initiative, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
