Job Summary:
This Application Engineer position will directly support all day-to-day automotive applications activities for Arconic’s Asian OEM customers and work internally with Arconic’s’ Asia based Engineering personnel, and US based Commercial, R&D and Manufacturing teams to coordinate all material qualifications and trials necessary to support their OEM accounts. Job Summary:
This Application Engineer position will directly support all day-to-day automotive applications activities for Arconic’s Asian OEM customers and work internally with Arconic’s’ Asia based Engineering personnel, and US based Commercial, R&D and Manufacturing teams to coordinate all material qualifications and trials necessary to support their OEM accounts. The Automotive Application Engineer will be based in the Farmington Hills Michigan office working a hybrid schedule and report directly to the Manager of Automotive Applications Engineering. In this role, you will:
- Serve as principle technical liaison between Arconic and its major Asian OEM and Tier customer(s).
- Maintain daily interaction with respective Asian OEM Materials Engineering personnel, as well as Arconic’s US based Commercial Account Manager, Marketing team, Manufacturing and R&D personnel and Asia based engineering team.
- Lead/Support Arconic's technical activity through the entire customer product development process including material selection, qualification, product design, structural analysis, manufacturing process development, and vehicle launch.
- Identify and communicate critical customer needs to Arconic Technology Center to enable strategic R&D initiatives in the areas of alloy development, surface treatments, joining, and recycling.
- Attend regular customer technical meetings associated with aluminum development initiatives such as supporting design reviews, feasibility assessments, process reviews, and tooling trials.
- Thoroughly understand Arconic product offerings, their physical and mechanical properties, characteristics, and performance benefits to be able to effectively promote and market those products to our customers. Lead the introduction of new alloys with our customers and promote how these new alloys will benefit the customer.
- Effectively apply the Arconic Stage-Gate Process to all customer development and qualification activities; assemble and lead gate reviews at critical milestones for each assigned project/qualification.
- Maintain an awareness of the commercial dealings for the assigned accounts and be able to support those commercial interactions when required.
- Attend/Participate/Present in key automotive conferences
- Travel up to 25% primarily domestic with some international travel
- Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited Institution with 5 years of relevant industry experience.
- 3 years of engineering experience at an automotive manufacturer, automotive tier supplier or similar.
- Advanced knowledge of material processing and material utilization in the OEM design and manufacturing processes.
- Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
- This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. §730, et seq.) and/or the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Authorizations from the relevant government agency may be required to meet export control compliance requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Japanese language skills capable of interacting on a technical and personal level with our Asian OEM partners and our internal Asia based engineering team.
- Have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the automotive vehicle/product development process including component design, structural analysis, and vehicle manufacturing processes including stamping, stamping assembly and vehicle assembly.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Material Science/Metallurgical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience with aluminum or other metals used in automotive body applications.
- 5 years of technical customer support/service experience representing sheet products from a design/manufacturing perspective or 5 years of experience in sheet metal component product design or manufacturing process development.
- Effective communication and team leadership skills with the ability to assemble and lead multidisciplinary teams to address customer related material issues including specification development, material property requirements, qualification activities, and launch.
- Technical understanding of products and processes at manufacturing plants and customer locations. Effective human relations and team leadership skills.
- Creativity, Initiative, Tenacity and Highly effective communication skills.
- Ability to comprehend the sophisticated technical processes that are critical to interpreting customer requirements and Arconic manufacturing systems.
- Strong learning ability and excellent organizational skills.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office products.
