Environment, Health and Safety Coordinator

What can you expect?

  • The Health and Safety team is based in Tikoe Industrial Area, Maseru, Lesotho. Our responsibility is to support daily operations with environment, health and safety programs. Our role is to promote safe and healthy work environment. The team is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal standards and to protect the well-being of all employees. The department also leads risk assessments, conducts training, and fosters a culture of safety acrocss the organisation.  
  • As the local team, we have full intergration to the regional SAF Adient structure with most support functions leadership based in South Africa.

Objective of the Function

Organize and coordinate the environmental, health and safety (EHS) management system of the company in line with all relevant local legislation and Adient requirements

What will your responsibilities be?

  • Monitor contractors to ensure they are compliant with the minimum EHS requirements and have a valid permit to work.
  • Ensure that the company’s EHS policies and procedures are fully complied with to reduce the risk of litigation.
  • Co-ordinate and control First Aid activities, accident & spillage investigations, and collation of accident statistics (internal and external reporting).
  • Liaise with Regional EHS Manager and HR Team on occupational health issues.
  • Liaise with the Regional EHS Manager on all environmental compliance issues.
  • Schedule and coordinate EHS committee meetings in accordance with company procedures. Represent the plant externally on EHS issues, in cooperation and agreement with the Regional EHS Manager.
  • Facilitation of incident investigations involving fire or other emergencies.
  • Ensure that people with responsibility for safety and environment are challenged.
  • Act as the “internal consultant” to the Plant Manager and to the plant management team.
  • Facilitation of statutory required measurements such as noise, lighting, and ventilations surveys, ESD measuring, infrared inspections etc. Drive closure of appropriate corrective actions.
  • Facilitate / provide and/or conduct training in all EHS matters.
  • Complete and update all Environmental Aspect and Impact assessments and Health/Safety Risk assessments (including Hazardous Chemical Substance assessments).
  • Assist plant management team in the development of EHS objective and targets to ensure compliance with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 and to drive continuous improvement.
  • Develop management programs for set objectives and targets. Track progress monthly and report to plant management.
  • Implement and maintain ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification.
  • Conduct internal EHS audits based on the company EHS management system and regional requirements.
  • Track progress and drive closure of open audit findings as per target dates.
  • Advise plant management on any updates/changes and actions required pertaining to EHS legislative requirements.
  • Ensure requirements as per monthly company KPI's are met.
  • Assist with ergonomic assessments.
  • Update existing site EHS policies, procedures, work instructions and forms when required. Develop new where identified as necessary.
  • Maintain an up-to-date list of all hazardous chemical substances used on site. MSDS to be available for all. Conduct EHS induction for new employees, temporary workers and external contractors performing work on company premises.
  • Ensure all statutory appointments are in place and current.
  • Conduct annual audits on service providers in terms of ISO14001 certification. Monitor open actions.
  • Ensure all required permits are available and valid.
  • Ensure all PPE requirements are implemented.
  • Update EHS reporting system monthly by deadline.
  • Update monthly information boards.
  • Ensure all reporting requirements as stipulated by the Regional EHS Manager are adhered to.
  • Facilitate visits from regulatory bodies/authorities.
  • Coordinate and test emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Responsible for site security, including coordination and compliance 
  • Comprehensive responsibility of plant cleanliness, including supervision or cleaners and adherence to cleaning schedules.

General:

  • EHS:

- Follow all Health & Safety and Environmental requirements that are defined on work instructions or communicated in training.

- Follow required emergency prevention and operational controls.

- Report all accidents, occupational illnesses and emergencies.

  • Quality:

- Apply, execute and maintain function related management system issues

- Knowledge of Customer requirements where applicable.

- In addition to the above-mentioned tasks other activities and responsibilities may be individually defined.

  • Minimum: Bachelor's degree in HSE/ Environmental Safety or Equivalent
  • At least 5 years' experience working in the EHS field, preferably in manufacturing environment
  • Experience working in the EHS field in automotive environment is highly advantageous
  • Experience with audits as well as documentations surrounding relevant audits
  • Ability to liaise with management and other stakeholders related to EHS
  • Experience managing IODs and relevant COID reporting requirements
  • Proven knowledge of HSEE policies and practices
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Ability to train and coach others
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel
  • Sound Knowledge of HSEE reporting
  • Knowledge of Lesotho Workman’s Compensation Acts
  • Sound knowledge of Health and Safety laws, Standards and Systems.
  • Must be registered with the Department of Labour Lesotho
