JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the System Director Lab & Pathology Services, shares with other supervisors 24 hour responsible and accountable for leadership and supervision of the department; promoting delivery of quality laboratory services and cost effective management of resources. Maintains clinical skills. Exhibits the F.I.R.S.T. values (Friendliness, Innovation, Respect, Service, and Trust).

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Able to assist on bench occasionally with MT/MLT duties.
  2. Manages the Quality Control Program (QAP) including monitoring, receiving, and responding to CAP proficiency testing.
  3. Coordinates service with vendors/service through review of QAP and weekly review of QC.
  4. Initiates responses to occurrence reports with corrective action and/or follow up.
  5. Facilitates instrument selection, evaluation and validation for implementation equipment.
  6. Facilitates Procedure Manual preparation, review, and revision.
  7. Assists in the preparation of cost analysis to maintain laboratory financial planning.
  8. Provides support to aid Laboratory Director with technical decisions.
  9. Works with LIS Manager, Client Support Facilitator, and Pathology to ensure continuum of laboratory operation, function, and processes.
  10. Facilitates and ensures that laboratory supplies, reagents, minor equipment, and other laboratory materials are properly ordered and stocked.
  11. Considers technical factors to assist the Director in formulating a laboratory objective/mission.
  12. Assists Director with other related duties.
  13. Facilitates scheduling with charge techs for laboratory Associates and handling laboratory Associates vacation approvals/denials. Occasionally assists with pathology associates in the same capacity when warranted.
  14. Documents attendance/punctuality through the Human Resources Absentee card system and counseling Associates when needed.
  15. Manages Associate payroll through Kronos system and communicating with the Director on Associate over-budgeted hours.
  16. Counsels and coaches Laboratory/Pathology Associates when warranted.
  17. Facilitates laboratory self-directed teams to ensure project completion. Occasionally assists with pathology team when warranted.
  18. Support Director with personnel decisions and evaluations.
  19. Provides supervision of the daily operations of the department to ensure quality of service and compliance with regulatory standards.
  20. Coordinates with education preceptor, training, orientation,and educational opportunities for staff and students to ensure acceptable competency levels and updates technical knowledge.
  21. Contributes to the effective leadership of the Organization by demonstrating a commitment to the departmental leadership team.
  22. Considers the age of the patients served, applies knowledge of growth and development and age-specific techniques through the life span (neonates/infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatric) in planning and implementing care.
  23. Demonstrates a commitment to professional accountability and growth to maintain and expand knowledge and skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS, HAZARDS, AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Works standard work week with overtime as necessary to meet workload and staffing requirements. Workload and staffing may require alternation in regularly scheduled shift. Moderate physical exertion with moderate to marked stress levels. Moderate noise level due to centrifuges and other instrumentation. Light to moderate moving of supplies. Works with toxic, caustic, and flammable chemicals and reagents. The task of this job involved exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissues. Must be able to move or position 25 lbs. independently.

 

CONTACTS WITH OTHERS:

Contact with patients, families, visitors, nursing, and Associates. Works closely with other departmental Associates. Also has contact with physicians and with students in clinical rotations.

 

EQUIPMENT USED/SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED:

Automated and non-automated laboratory instrumentation and tools.

Qualifications

Five (5) years clinical laboratory experience; previous supervisory experience is preferred.
