Job Summary:
The Specialized Tax Services (STS) Tax Experienced Senior, Business Incentives Group is primarily responsible for executing project tasks to identify, document, and support on exam BIG tax credits and incentives. In this role, the STS Tax Experienced Senior, Business Incentives Group is charged with utilizing research skills and applying industry knowledge to understand the potential BIG tax credit issues and opportunities and to gather client information and documentation to identify qualified costs and expenses and calculate the BIG benefits efficiently and effectively. The role also may assist with business development and operational matters.
Job Duties:
Research
- Identifies intermediate to complex situations when research is needed, providing an outline of the issue(s) and research to be conducted
- Analyzes researched facts and sources prior to composing a detailed report of the research findings
- Composes standard research memos in support of projects / transactions
Tax Compliance
- Ensures clients comply with applicable authorities while identifying options for minimizing the client’s tax and reporting burdens
- Obtains required client information to utilize in the preparation of tax filings
- Identifies “gray areas” and communicates related risk potential for contingent tax liabilities
- Completes pro forma Forms 6765 and other related state forms
- Ensures all necessary approvals and documentation, including but not limited to budgets, work plans, executed tax engagement letters, are in place prior to engagement work commencing
Tax Consulting
- Develops, recommends, and implements standard tax methods to provide clients with maximum tax benefits related to current and future tax obligations
- Assists in the review and response to notices for federal and state agencies
- Documents all significant tax positions, as well as issues, findings, and deliverables in accordance with firm policies
- Identifies and calculates BIG benefits, including potential credits, deductions, and other federal and state opportunities
- Contributes to the development of new and improved ways to identify qualified costs and activities
- Identifies tax consulting opportunities and participates in the marketing of services to existing and prospective clients
Tax Controversy
- Supports representation of clients before tax authorities on contested issues
Tax Related Software
- Uses Caseware, GoSystems, tax research databases, and other tax-related software in the completion of assigned tasks
Tax Specialization
- Develops an in-depth understanding of the technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding BIG tax benefits
- Calculates the federal BIG tax credit and applies BIG benefits of all states in his/her region
- Suggests ways to develop or improve tools, methodologies, policies, etc., to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of BIG services
- Identifies other opportunities and issues other than those related only to BIG

- Understands and applies industry standards, along with firm policies and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements as they relate to FAS 109 and FIN48
- Recognizes, measures, and documents clients’ financial benefits
Strategy Development
- Assists in the preparation of studies of tax implications to identify alternative courses of actions to benefits clients
- Develops new or improved ideas to advance the position of clients, the firm or firm personnel through reduction in taxes or expenses or offering of non-tax benefits
- Identifies and communicates possibilities for referrals while maintain awareness of the firm’s tax specialists
Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervises and reviews the day-to-day work of STS BIG Associates and Interns on assigned engagements
- Ensures STS BIG Associates and Interns are trained on all relevant tax software
- Delivers periodic performance feedback and completes performance evaluations for STS BIG Associates and Interns
- Acts as mentor to STS BIG Associates and Interns
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree, required
- Degree in accounting, tax, or finance, preferred
Experience:
- Three (3) or more years of prior experience, required
- Prior experience performing services related to BIG tax credits preferred
- Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis preferred
License/Certifications:
- CPA certification, preferred
Software:
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word
Language:
- Fluent in verbal and written English

- Solid organizational skills, especially ability to meet project deadlines with a focus on details
- Ability to successfully multi-task while working independently or within a group environment

- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with client personnel
- Ability to successfully interact with professionals at all levels
- Ability to prepare simple tax returns
- Possesses a familiarity with all types of tax filing forms
- Intermediate knowledge of appropriate application of tax standards to ensure effective and efficient delivery of tax services
- Intermediate knowledge of sources of relevant information utilized in tax filings
- Understanding and recognition of the economics of underlying transactions and book to tax differences in preparation of tax returns
Individual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.
National Range: $74,550 - $147,000
Maryland Range: $74,550 - $147,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $74,550 - $147,000
Washington DC Range: $74,550 - $147,000
