The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of Laboratory Assistant, located within the Necropsy Lab of Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences department. The primary purpose of this position is to assist faculty and staff with basic laboratory needs. Position helps maintain lab facilities and equipment, including cleaning, processing packages and samples, and restocking supplies. Incumbent interacts with students, clinicians, veterinary nurses, pet owners, service technicians, and others.
- Supports the laboratory by collecting, preparing, and labeling specimens, ensuring they are ready for analysis according to laboratory procedures.
- Maintains inventory of supplies and reagents.
- May provide work direction to students.
- Frequently works with deceased animals.
- Maintains cleanliness of lab.
- Keeps records of laboratory information and test results.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:
- Basic knowledge of Biology, Chemistry, or another Laboratory Science
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to make coordinated hand and finger movements to grasp and manipulate objects
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds without assistance
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Must be responsible and a self-starter
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Ability to interact professionally with veterinarians, students, staff, and technical support staff
Minimum Qualifications:
Depending on experience and qualifications of successful candidate, individual will be hired in as a Laboratory Assistant 1, Laboratory Assistant 2, or Laboratory Assistant 3.
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment visa status.
Laboratory Assistant 1:
- Minimum Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with basic laboratory procedures
- Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Basic knowledge of Biology, Chemistry, or another Laboratory Science
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to make coordinated hand and finger movements to grasp and manipulate objects
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds without assistance

- High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of relevant work experience in a laboratory setting.
- Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Knowledge of Biology, Chemistry, or another Laboratory Science
- Intermediate computer skills
- Ability to make coordinated hand and finger movements to grasp and manipulate objects
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds without assistance
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Must be responsible and a self-starter
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Ability to interact professionally with veterinarians, students, staff, and technical support staff
- Ability to learn and use novel computer systems and basic laboratory equipment
- Ability to train others
Laboratory Assistant 3:
- Minimum Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent and 4 years of relevant work experience in a laboratory setting.
- Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Intermediate knowledge of Biology, Chemistry, or another Laboratory Science
- Intermediate to advanced computer skills
- Ability to make coordinated hand and finger movements to grasp and manipulate objects
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds without assistance
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Must be responsible and a self-starter
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Ability to interact professionally with veterinarians, students, staff, and technical support staff
- Ability to learn and use novel computer systems and basic laboratory equipment
- Ability to train others
The Veterinary Medical Center is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year. Occasional weekend, evening, or holiday work may be required of this position.

- Anticipated hiring range: $39,805.79 to $41,798.22
