This is a hybrid position, which requires working onsite 2-3 days per week. Onsite requirements are a minimum of 1 day in St. Paul and 1-2 days in Princeton. Occasional travel may be required but is not frequent.

Summary:
Reporting directly to the CFO, the Corporate Controller will be a hands-on and strategic leader, leading and mentoring the accounting team, and will have ultimate responsibility for all accounting, tax, and treasury functions. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical accounting background, exceptional leadership skills, and the ability to drive process improvements and strategic financial initiatives. This role is critical to ensuring the integrity of our financial reporting, managing our cash flow, and providing strategic insights to support the company’s growth and profitability.

Essential Functions:

Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Team Leadership: Leads and manages all aspects of the accounting department, including the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
  • Financial Statements: Oversees the preparation and analysis of all internal and external financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and statements of cash flow, ensuring accuracy and compliance with U.S. GAAP.
  • Audit Management: Serves as the primary point of contact for the annual external financial audit. Coordinates all audit activities, manages the preparation of audit schedules, and ensures a timely and clean audit opinion.
  • Internal Controls: Designs, implements, and maintains a robust system of internal controls to protect company assets, ensure data integrity, and minimize financial risk. Conducts regular reviews and updates of control procedures. Establishes and maintains controls regarding expenditure authorization, spending policies and procedures (e.g., T&E, Tech, etc.) and approval limits. Overseescorporate travel and credit card programs. Manages the capital expenditures accounting process for the organization.
  • Consolidation: Manages the consolidation of financial results for all legal entities, including intercompany reconciliations and eliminations.
  • Planning: Works closely with finance team to assist with the development of the quarterly forecasts and annual operating plans, focusing on key areas for which the Controller is responsible (e.g. AR, AP, capital/depreciation).

    Tax Management

    • Compliance: Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings, working with external tax preparation firm as needed. Works with internal and external resources to complete income, sales, real estate, and excise tax returns, estimates and payments. Support owners’ tax needs.
    • Strategy: Works with external tax advisors to develop and execute tax planning strategies to optimize the owners’ tax position.
    • Audit Support: Acts as the main point of contact for any tax audits and inquiries from regulatory bodies.

    Treasury & Cash Management

    • Cash Flow: Owns the company's cash management function, including daily monitoring of cash balances, management of bank accounts, and execution of wire transfers and other electronic payments.
    • Forecasting: Develops and maintains short-term and long-term cash flow forecasts to ensure adequate liquidity for operational needs and strategic investments.
    • Banking Relationships: Manages relationships with banking partners, including negotiating terms for credit facilities, lines of credit, and other banking services. Monitors debt levels and compliance with debt covenants and act as point person for bank reporting.
    • Risk Management: Monitors and manages financial risks, including foreign currency exposure and interest rate risk, in collaboration with the CFO. Manages credit functions including credit limits and payment analysis and AR collections. Works with credit insurance agency.

    Leadership & Team Management

    • Talent Development: Leads, mentors, and develops a high-performing accounting team. Conducts performance reviews, identifies training needs, and fosters a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.
    • Process Improvement: Drives initiatives to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of financial processes and systems, including leading system upgrades and implementations.
    • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partners effectively with all departments to provide financial guidance and support, ensuring alignment with company-wide goals. Partner closely with Director, FP&A on forecasting, budgeting, business diagnosis, and management reporting. Works closely with HR ensuring proper accounting for wages, bonus, and benefits programs.
    • Performs all other duties as assigned.

    Required Competencies:

    • Must have computer/technology knowledge and skills necessary to perform job responsibilities. Proficiency with a major ERP system (e.g., Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, SAP) and advanced Excel skills are essential.
    • Must have deep, hands-on knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls.
    • Must have strong leadership skills and a proven track record of leading, mentoring, and developing an accounting team.
    • Must have exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively translate complex financial data for non-financial stakeholders.

    Required Education & Experience:

    • Must have the ability to maintain current knowledge, skills and/or certifications relevant to assigned job responsibilities.
    • A minimum of 7-10 years with an audit firm and/or controller experience.
    • Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
    • Related combination of education and experience.

    Preferred Education & Experience:

    • Master’s degree in accounting.
    • Experience in a private company or private equity owned company.
    • Experience working with a manufacturing company, specifically a CPG company within the food and beverage industry.
    • Mergers and acquisitions experience.

    Supervisor Responsibilities:
    Direct reports include the Sr. Accounting Analyst and Accounting Supervisor. Indirect reports include five Accounting Specialists.

    Work Location & Travel Required:

    Work Environment & Physical Demands:
    Work is performed primarily in an office setting. This position requires the ability to sit and use a computer for extended periods of time, including the dexterity to frequently type on a keyboard.

    Starting Pay Range:
    140,000 - 170,000 Annually

    Where a candidate falls within the pay range will vary based on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, geographic location, education, skills and experience.
