We have an opportunity for a Senior Corporate Lawyer to join the team to provide legal support & advice on all non-dispute customer related matters. Our lawyers focus on delivering valuable and pragmatic commercial and legal outcomes for BNZ and our customers. This is a 12 month fixed term opportunity working part time (22.5 hours) per week.  

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role 

We spoke with the Head of Legal - Business, Corporate & Institutional Banking (who you'd report to), and she gave us some great insight on what to expect with this tūranga (role): 

What are 5 day to day tasks the person in this role will complete? 

  • Ownership of a portfolio, including prioritisation and delivery of workflow in line with BNZ strategy, with a primary focus on transactional banking and financial services 

  • Developing and implementing policies, procedures and tools to simplify our business and enable us to deliver better customer outcomes 

  • Proactively leading relationships 

  • Engaging with colleagues and other stakeholders 

  • Arranging and delivering training and presentations 

What is your management style? 

I encourage a collaborative team who supports each other.  I like to provide team members with autonomy, but am available for support and guidance as needed. 

What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role? 

  • Significant New Zealand legal experience in a wide range of banking and finance matters, including in particular, financial services 

  • 8+ years' post qualification legal experience, including experience in banking & financial services or corporate/commercial at a top tier law firm and/or financial institution 

  • Ability to work independently (and remotely) without supervision 

  • Ability to supervise other lawyers and/or contribute to leadership of a legal team 

  • Ability to influence, and to proactively lead relationships, at multiple levels and/or in multiple areas 

  • Excellent technical legal and communication skills.
