About the Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Low-Voltage Battery Engineer to join our team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the improvement and development of low-voltage power supply components and system specifications, focusing on 12V batteries for Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), and Electric Vehicle (EV) electrical systems. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the advancement of battery technology within a dynamic automotive environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and size 12V batteries, including first-tier supplier selection and specification development.
  • Create and/or modify low-voltage lead-acid requirements and input into specifications.
  • Look at next generation low voltage batteries, Lithium and Sodium.
  • Create and/or modify low-voltage battery and sub-system requirements.
  • Develop and execute design and verification testing plans.
  • Support investigations and opportunities with lithium and sodium ion battery technology as an alternative to lead acid 12- volt batteries.
  • Support supplier Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) processes.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 26262 Automotive Functional Safety requirements.
  • Manage the release of batteries into the Ford system (or equivalent for other companies).
  • Integrate power supply components into electrical charging systems for ICE and/or EV systems.
  • Manage the FEDE release of specifications and FMA (Failure Mode Analysis) Quality documents.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to complete all supplier component FMA documentation, including CPAs (Change Point Analysis) SCCAFs (Special Characteristics Communication and Agreement Form) and Control Plans development.
  • Address quality issues, both internally and with suppliers.
  • Handle battery homologation and labeling requirements.
  • Review supplier DFMEAs (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and complete DFMEA assessments.
  • Lead technical studies regarding the battery performance, cycling, charge acceptance and their effect on end of life 
  • Interface with other power supply component and applications engineers and receive direction from the battery subject matter expert.
  • Contribute to and support supplier Technical Design Reviews (TDRs) before sourcing and during new technology development.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering field.
  • 3+ years of experience in battery design release or battery manufacturing.
  • 3+ years of experience in low-voltage battery product development.
  • 3+ years of experience in low-voltage power supply development and testing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
  • Familiarity with Ford Systems (FEDE, Teamcenter, JAMA, WERS) or equivalent systems.
  • 5+ years of experience in battery manufacturing or battery design release.
