The Radiology RN III is an advanced licensed clinician and functions at the proficient level. Provides expert, high-quality nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic imaging and interventional radiology (IR) procedures. Includes comprehensive assessments, patient education, IV access and sedation monitoring, post-procedure recovery, and timely emergency interventions.Collaborates closely with radiologists, technologists, and the interprofessional care team to ensure safe, effective care before, during, and after procedures. As a clinical expert and leader, the RN III coaches and mentors staff, role-models compassionate communication, and contributes to professional practice improvements at the bedside, unit, and organizational levels. Responsibilities may include serving as charge nurse, leading unit-based or shared governance activities, coordinating education, and acting as a clinical resource to drive high-quality patient outcomes and a positive work environment.
- Perform comprehensive pre-procedure nursing assessments, obtain medical histories, and develop individualized plans of care in collaboration with patients, families, and the interprofessional care team.
- Prepare patients physically and emotionally for diagnostic imaging and interventional radiology (IR) procedures; provide clear education on procedures, risks, and post-care instructions.
- Establish IV access, administer medications, and monitor vital signs and sedation levels throughout procedures to ensure patient safety.
- Assist radiologists during interventional procedures (e.g., angiography, biopsies, drain placements) and support exams across multiple imaging modalities (CT, MRI, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine).
- Manage post-procedure recovery, monitor for complications, provide discharge instructions, and ensure a safe transition of care.
- Recognize and respond promptly to changes in patient condition; lead emergency interventions when necessary, including rapid responses and emergency codes.
- Document all assessments, interventions, medications, and patient responses accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR) in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
- Ensure patient safety, privacy, and comfort during all radiologic procedures, maintaining high standards of compassionate, culturally competent care.
- Serve as a liaison between the radiology team and other departments to support seamless patient care coordination.
- Model effective therapeutic communication, active listening, and positive peer-to-peer accountability to foster a healthy work environment.
- Mentor, coach, and serve as a resource for staff and students; provide oversight for onboarding and preceptorships to support staff development and retention.
- Lead patient and family-centered care standards, advocate for patients rights, and guide resolution of clinical and ethical concerns using appropriate resources.
- Drive departmental initiatives to improve patient satisfaction, safety, and quality outcomes by modeling accountability and evidence-based practice.
- Identify opportunities for performance improvement and lead unit projects, audits, and shared governance activities that support innovation and best practices.
- Support operational efficiency through effective time management, prioritization of tasks, and mentoring staff in strategies to meet throughput and financial goals.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of unit and hospital standards, protocols, and guidelines; lead by example in compliance with regulatory and professional practice requirements.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor's of Science in Nursing required
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
- Current Texas Board of Nursing (or Compact State) RN license; Or a Temporary Texas RN License (Permanent TX license within 90 days upon hire).
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, within 7 days of hire.
