The Ambulatory Surgical Center Intermediate Surgical Technologist will collaborate with medical team staff to facilitate safe and effective care of the procedural and surgical patient. Works to ensure the operating environment is safe, that the equipment functions properly and that the procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize positive patient outcome and safety. The intermediate surgical technologist is an experienced clinician who role models compassionate communication with patients, family members, interprofessional healthcare teams, and physicians. 

  • Completes duties while under the supervision of the registered nurse and the medical provider. 
  • The technologist may label drugs on the field, prepare, label, and verify specimens according to the surgeons' preference, use proper documentation related to sterilization procedures, sign/verify instrument count sheets, verify cases are pulled according to the preference cards. 
  • Assist in positioning the patient and patient prep; drapes at the provider's request. 
  • Assist with other duties under the direction of the surgeon. 
  • Upon completion of the surgery, assists in moving the patient off the operating table and assists in transporting patients to the recovery room. 
  • Assists in clearing the operating room for the next procedure, including appropriate disposal of contaminated linen and waste, cleaning instruments when necessary, and disinfecting equipment. 
  • Uses proper documentation related to sterilization procedures. 
  • Signs/verifies initials on instrument count sheet and signs preference list when pulling of case is completed. 
  • Must adapt to unexpected changes and utilize critical thinking skills to assess patient situations, confer with team members, and seek guidance from clinical resources as necessary. 
  • Contributes to the development and revision of standards/policies as needs are identified. 
  • Identifies and utilizes information from monitors and research to effect changes in practice. 
  • Maintains a working knowledge of emergency protocol in the event of a disaster in the operating room, emergency procedure and surgical set-ups necessary to manage an emergency.

  • Demonstrate strong organizational and problem-solving skills as evidenced by capacity to prioritize multiple tasks. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, co­ workers, and other health team members. 
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English and be able to perform all other duties as assigned. 
  • Skill in performing assigned patient care tasks under the direction and supervision of a designated Registered Nurse and works under the direction of the surgeon for procedural related tasks. 
  • Knowledge in preparing operating room according to a particular surgical procedure with the assistance of other personnel in accordance with procedures for disinfection of furniture and equipment. 
  • Skill in exercising proper sterile technique, opens and arranges sterile field in accordance with accepted protocol for each surgical procedure to be performed, both routine and special procedures. 
  • Ability to clear the operating room for the next procedure, including appropriate disposal of contaminated linen and waste, cleaning instruments when necessary, and disinfecting equipment. 
  • Required certifications must remain current and valid.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience in hospital or ambulatory surgical center setting.

EDUCATION:

High School graduated or GED equivalent required. Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program required.  

LICENSES/CERTS:

CST - Certified Surgical Tech required.

BLS/CPR cert required.
