The mission of Milestone Recovery is to provide compassionate care and services to empower individuals experiencing substance use disorders, mental illnesses and homelessness to attain an enhanced quality of life regardless of ability to pay.

Position Summary:

The Controller leads all accounting at Milestone and plays a key role in supporting the financial operations of the organization. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, assisting with budgeting and reporting, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and donor requirements. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, mission-driven, and experienced in non-profit accounting.

Onsite Position: Though we have flexibility to offer some remote work, this role is primarily an onsite position at our India St. Portland, ME office.

Key Responsibilities:

Prepares monthly financial statements by reviewing and revising the preliminary trial balance and any related support analyses.
Prepares month-end journal entries necessary to assure the accurate and complete reporting of financial information.
Exercises control over the preparation of internal management reports, e.g., Program Review, by reviewing such reports prior to organization-wide distribution.
Ensures that all reporting systems are current and complete; supervise changes that result from business operations.
Determines that detailed information in support of the financial reporting process is accurate and complete, review on a periodic basis the worksheets and/or analyses prepared and maintained by the accounting team.
Ensures timeliness of external reporting including financial, compliance, foundation, and other third-party reporting.
Executes the reconciliation process to ensure balance sheet and revenue accounts are reconciled and reviewed timely with reconciling items are resolved.
Plans, coordinates, and prepares for annual audits by independent certified public accountants and other payor audits.
Accounts for restricted donations and gifts in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Participates in the design of procedures and policies to ensure that a strong financial internal control environment is present and understood by Milestone employees. Monitors and communicates improvement opportunities to leadership and staff.
Oversees the financial grant management of Milestone.
Process accounts payable and receivable, ensuring proper documentation and approvals.
Track restricted and unrestricted funds and ensure proper allocation of expenses.
Act as secondary payroll processor, stepping in as needed to ensure seamless payroll administration.
Administer and monitor company credit card program, including issuing cards, setting spending limits, reconciling monthly statements, and ensuring compliance with internal policies and documentation requirements.
Engages in professional development to ensure understanding and implementation requirements of current federal and state rules and regulations. Develops and maintains the technical skill necessary to utilize computer-supported information systems in all aspects of budgeting and financial reporting. Optimizes the use of technology to create efficiencies.

Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in accounting or other appropriate technical undergraduate degree
Minimum of 3 years' accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit setting.
Proficiency with QuickBooks
Strong Excel skills
Excellent organizational and communication skills.
Commitment to the mission and values of Milestone Recovery.
CPA or working toward CPA certification is a plus.

This position is full benefits-eligible starting first of the month following start date. The pay range for this role is $90,000 - $100,000 annual salary.
