Position Summary

The Senior Vice President will provide management, direction and leadership of the underwriting group, be responsible for increasing net premium written, while maintaining expected business profitability;  develop and mentor direct reports and their underwriting teams; provide management direction and leadership.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • In accordance with business standards, guidelines and Marine goals, lead the team to achieve organization growth, while maintaining targeted profitability.
  • Establish and maintain sound business practices. Provide ongoing assistance to management in the interpretation, implementation, and achievement of those business goals.
  • Evaluate underwriting, renewals and new business, actuarial trends, ceded reinsurance, market opportunity, and product application to determine profitable growth plans.
  • Personally participate in marketplace initiatives through interface with key customers, brokers and reinsurers to promote Arch Insurance Marine expertise.
  • Regularly meet with brokers, industry groups, reinsurers and insureds to present and represent the business unit’s interests and innovation.
  • In accordance with business standards and guidelines, help to analyze and make recommendations in support of the organization’s risk aggregate management goals.
  • Maintain the desired level of technical and commercial expertise of the underwriting team to achieve the profitability goals, as well as satisfactory customer experience. Ensure all underwriters follow guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Escalate new products and services development that are identified as profitable opportunity; Develop distribution plans with Distribution and the regional management teams.
  • Participate in marketplace initiatives through interface with key customers and brokers to promote Arch Insurance property expertise.
  • Provide oversight and direction in support of accelerated growth through cycle management and execution of growth strategies across the entire country.
  • Frequently engage with brokers for Voice of the Customer, seek input and feedback from the Marine team for continuous improvement, and communicate with peers.
  • Provide direction to achieve business success by defining, designing and executing actions that maximize product line underwriting results and competitive advantages. This includes new products and services development, review and enhancement of underwriting guidelines, development of distribution plans.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of exposures, legal environment, coverage, pricing, global competitive environment and program structuring for Marine products assigned, including tools and systems pertinent to product portfolio management.
  • Ability to demonstrate interpersonal and leadership skills as evidenced by experience in dealing with brokers, industry groups, and insureds. 
  • Extensive network of relationships with retail, wholesale, local, regional and national brokers who control the type of Marine business being targeted.
  • Strong Marine market presence and recognition as a leader by peer companies who may be following our lead.
  • Give attention to the details and extract the relevant information to formulate high level strategies.
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative environment, such as sharing distribution strategies and responsibilities with our Strategy & Distribution Team, relying on and working with Operations for the non-underwriting services.
  • Focus on execution. Appreciate a fast-paced environment, efficiently delegate and regularly check on progress, report progress or challenges; decisive.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, analytical, organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills.
  • Owns and develops tactical and operational plans and goals for a large function. Recommends and operationalizes strategies that have a direct impact on the achievement of functional strategies.
  • Works to influence others to accept job function’s view/practices and agree/accept new concepts, practices, and approaches. Requires ability to communicate with executive leadership.
  • Manages multiple teams led by Managers and/or Supervisors. Responsible for creating workforce and staffing plans for department / unit to ensure availability of human capital necessary to accomplish departmental business results.
  • Requires advanced management and leadership knowledge to lead cross-department project teams or manage across multiple functions. Typically has mastery within a specific technical or broad expertise across multiple related disciplines.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 15 years of Marine underwriting experience in the products being managed, including a progression of management roles at a national level with responsibility for bottom line results.
  • Additional industry-specific study or designations (such as CPCU, ASLI/AU, ARM) are a plus.

For individuals assigned or hired to work in the location(s) indicated below, the base salary range is provided. Range is as of the time of posting. Position is incentive eligible.

$270,000 - $325,000/year

  • Total individual compensation (base salary, short & long-term incentives) offered will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to geographic location, scope & responsibilities of the role, qualifications, talent availability & specialization as well as business needs. The above pay range may be modified in the future.
