Position Summary

The Vice President of Arch Marine is responsible for the technical underwriting, account management, and profitability of that product line insurance portfolio.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Acting within the company guidelines and letter of authority will develop a profitable book of product specific Marine business.
  • Create a new business plan in collaboration with our Strategy and Distribution division to achieve target production with our producer partners.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with approved producers through marketing - preparing and delivering presentations, training, and introduction of new products.
  • Assist with developing new relationships with producers who have the kind of profitable Marine business we are targeting.
  • Maintain underwriting discipline through experience, product knowledge, exposure analysis, use of tools and resources in making sound underwriting judgements.
  • Proactively manage renewals to ensure high retention levels while taking corrective measures on unprofitable business.
  • Ability to multi-task, manage a high submission flow, evaluate, prioritize, expeditiously determine eligibility and deliver quotes in a timely manner to achieve a high bind to quote ratio.
  • Mentor, offer support and guidance for our less experienced team underwriters. 
  • Identify new business opportunities to differentiate the company.
  • Support senior management in promoting department initiatives, goals, and objectives.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive product knowledge of product specific marine insurance coverage forms, endorsements, and manuscript forms.
  • Strong market presence and following with our target producer base and a respected lead among market competitors.
  • Knowledge placing facultative reinsurance.
  • Must have well developed active listening, problem solving mindset and interpersonal skills for developing and strengthening broker relationships.
  • Strong communication skills, business writing and oral presentation skills must be excellent.
  • Must have well developed business acumen to understand performance metrics, develop and implement profitable growth strategy within his/her dedicated territory.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.
  • Sound technology capabilities in Microsoft products such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint and ability to use and manipulate data.
  • Knowledge of CAT Modeling parameters (PML, AAL, data quality) to assess an account and a portfolio exposure and calculate a cat rate.
  • Understand the key elements of risk selection and risk assessment, can develop loss estimates, develop and negotiate a risk mitigation plan based on survey reports and place facultative reinsurance when necessary.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Additional industry-specific study or designations (such as CPCU & ARM) are a plus
  • 10 years’ experience underwriting product specific Marine business.

For individuals assigned or hired to work in the location(s) indicated below, the base salary range is provided. Range is as of the time of posting. Position is incentive eligible.

$225,000 - $275,000/year

  • Total individual compensation (base salary, short & long-term incentives) offered will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to geographic location, scope & responsibilities of the role, qualifications, talent availability & specialization as well as business needs. The above pay range may be modified in the future.
