Job Description
We are seeking a Guidance Counselor to join our team at Cuyahoga Hills Juvenile Correctional Facility. Duties for a include, but are not limited to:
- Assess educational and/or vocational status of youth for placement in educational programs and/or for identification of realistic career options and to provide individual and/or group counseling
- Select, administer, score, and interpret educational and vocational assessment tests as needed to determine appropriate placement in educational program
- Enroll all new students into the proper school courses; review, interpret, and record all past records on the working transcript
- Regularly review current student progress and reschedule students into appropriate classes
- Counsel students on educational and personal problems; advise students on graduation pathways and possible post-high school programs (i.e., college and vocational training schools)
- Meet with school Principal regarding school options and programs
- Maintain accurate records (e.g., daily count of students in each class, student course completion)
- Prepare transcripts to be submitted to Principal at the time of release or transfer and as submission for graduation as appropriate
Qualifications
Must have valid Pupil Personnel Services certificate as a school counselor issued by Ohio Department of Education AND
- Guidance Counselor 1 must have master's degree; starting pay $71,260
- Guidance Counselor 2 must have master's degree and 30 hours of post-graduate study

Supplemental InformationBACKGROUND CHECK NOTICE:
The final candidate selected for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening. Criminal convictions do not necessarily preclude an applicant from consideration for a position. An individual assessment of an applicant's prior criminal convictions will be made before excluding an applicant from consideration.
PRE-SERVICE TRAINING:
All new candidates hired to the Department of Youth Services must complete a paid, mandatory 6 weeks of training. Week 1 is held at the facility, weeks 2 through 4 are held at DYS Training Academy in Orient, Ohio, Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am - 5:00 pm. (travel, lodging, and meals are provided). Weeks 5 - 6 are on the job training held at the facility.
DYS is a “qualifying employer” for purposes of the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness [PSLF] program.
