EMS Driver - St. Lawrence Health (Per Diem)

Job Title: EMS Driver 

Department: Emergency Medical Services 

Location: St. Lawrence Health Systems 

Hours Per Week: Per Diem (as needed)

Schedule: Variable shift/days, weekends, and holidays; 12 hour shifts 

  

SUMMARY: 

The ambulance operator is responsible to provide high quality emergency transportation to sick and injured patients. 
 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Responds to calls when dispatched 

• Inspects the ambulance before each shift, including fuel, oil, transmission fluid, wiper fluid, and coolant; reports any needed repairs 

• Checks first aid and medical supply inventory levels before each shift and ensures the ambulance is well-stocked 

• Assists patients onto gurneys and loads them into and out of the ambulance 

• Keeps the inside and outside of the ambulance clean 

• Sanitizes the ambulance and safely disposes of medical waste and soiled linens 

• Administers first aid such as bandaging, splinting, and oxygen administration 

• Maintains a driving log with daily entries, including patients’ names and addresses, travel times, mileage, and services performed 

• Reports accident facts to medical personnel and police officers, when necessary 

   

Physical Requirements: 

• Able to stand, lift, and bend for extended periods of time 

• Stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and pushing up to 50 pounds 

• Close visual acuity; able to read manuals and other printed or handwritten materials 

• Able to work with and manipulate equipment settings, computer keyboard, etc. 

• Ability to work well under pressure 

• Ability to read a map and follow directions 

Environmental Requirements: 

• OSHA Category II: Some risk of exposure to blood/body fluids during daily job duties 

• Regular and on-time attendance 

• Work hours may regularly exceed 40 hours per week 

• May be required to work non-standard shifts (weekends, evenings, swing shifts, or combinations) 

• Occasional travel by conventional means to other locations as needed 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

• High School diploma or GED 

• AHA BLS  

• NYS Driver’s License 

  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Minimum two years’ driving an ambulance

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for a successful full time applicant. It may be modified in the future and eligible for additional pay components. Pay is determined by factors including experience, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
