Reports to: Aquatics Program Manager


Summary/objective:

Your primary role is to be a leader who motivates, teaches, and challenges swimmers to achieve their unique personal goals. Swim coaches are responsible for developing, organizing, and implementing scheduled swim practices. Swim coaches are also responsible for writing practices, setting goals with team members, and assist in maintaining team records. Swim coach will exhibit patience, warmth, enthusiasm, and effective communication skills with all participants.


Essential functions:

  • Teach proper competitive swimming techniques and provides competitive swimming instruction to swim team members
  • Organizes and conducts team workouts
  • Works effectively with other coaches as assigned
  • Maintain required certifications (listed below)
  • Coach with enthusiasm, warmth and professionalism
  • Effectively communicates with participants about goals and progress, as well as parents regarding their child’s progress
  • Provide exceptional customer service in all interactions with participants, parents, and members
  • Notify Aquatics Program Manager when repairs or supplies are needed
  • Effectively communicate with Aquatics Management related to potential risks at the pool
  • Assist Lifeguards in maintaining a safe environment for all patrons
  • Proactively communicate with members regarding space designated for practice
  • Complete Incident Reports as needed
  • Comply with all written Shalom Austin policies and procedures.
  • Arrive to on time, as scheduled.
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

 Preferred qualifications:

  • USA Swimming Foundations of Coaching 101 and Foundations of Coaching 201
  • USA Swimming Rules and Regulations for Coaches.
  • USA Swimming Athlete Protection Training Requirement
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certified w/ Safety Training for Swim Coaches (or valid Lifeguard certification)
  • All certifications must be current and in good standing.
  • Possess excellent knowledge of the technical and training aspects of competitive swimming with proven record of excellent swimmer progression

Competency:

  • Must be self-motivated and demonstrate the ability to take initiative and works well collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Possess strong skills in time management, adaptability, attention to detail, and problem solving.
  • Ability to effectively address multiple tasks at the same time and ability to interact with people of diverse backgrounds required
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Principles and practices of excellent customer service
  • Interpreting customer and facility needs and solving customer service and public relations issues.
  • Responding to emergencies and determining corrective actions using available resources.
  • Effective, clear and concise communication.
  • Previous aquatics or recreational facility experience is a plus

Position type and expected hours of work:

  • Part-time; non-exempt
  • Coaching schedule is based on department needs
  • Expected coaching hours are Monday and Wednesday evening 7:00pm-8:30pm.

Job Requirements

  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid Pediatric and Adults certification or acquired within first two weeks of employment. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, or equivalent, may be provided instead.
  • Pass all required criminal history background checks (which may, depending on the position you are hired for, include an FBI fingerprint check)

Work environment:

  • Environment provides for a safe and healthy work environment and is smoke and drug free.
  • Must always be ready to jump or swim in water with appropriate swimming attire during a water emergency or with an aquatics program.
  • Work is performed in an office environment and all-weather conditions, with potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, wet surfaces, pool maintenance equipment, infectious diseases and blood borne pathogens.
  • Work outdoors in all types of weather and/or inclement conditions, and at times in confined spaces.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond and work with participant’s needs and safety issues; and tolerate loud noise associated with enthusiasm and excitement.
  • Constant medium to high level background noise
  • Ability to move quickly, efficiently, and accurately
  • May be required to work immediately before, during or after an emergency or disaster.
  • Ability to work extended hours outdoors in high and occasionally low temperatures; often exposed to extreme heat and sun for extended periods.

Physical demands:

  • Ability to swim for long distances, minimum 300 yards
  • Ability to pass rescue skills and first aid proficiency test.
  • Ability to safely pull, push, lift and carry items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Ability to sit, bend, and reach for extended periods of time
  • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods (often greater than 1 hour)
  • Must be able to see, speak, and hear.
