Asheville Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We do, however, hold the County contract for animal sheltering. This means that we are the open-admission shelter for all Buncombe County animals.
Position Summary
The Adoption Program Coordinator supports potential adopters, community members, and the Adoption Program by answering inquiries, guiding visitors, and ensuring a welcoming experience. Responsibilities include managing the retail store, handling inventory and transactions, recording donations, and assisting the Adoptions Manager with administrative tasks, including processing and counseling adoptions during busy times.
Schedule: The Adoption Program Coordinator works in the AHS Adoption Center. The typical work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Compensation & Benefits: The salary for the Adoption Program Coordinator starts at $17.75/hour. Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for greeting all visitors to the Adoption Center.
- Train and supervise front desk volunteers and organize daily tasks.
- Assist in counseling and processing adoption paperwork during peak hours.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and clutter-free lobby.
- Maintain the merchandise and displays in the retail area, including stocking and rotating items.
- Conduct monthly inventory of retail items on display and in storage.
- Process retail transactions and daily cash balancing.
- Record all in-kind donated items received in the adoption center.
- Process adoption forms and paperwork when needed.
- Oversee the Pet Match Assistance Program.
- Assist in writing descriptions and bios for adoptable animals.
- Take going-home photos of adopted pets and maintain the electronic files.
- Keep the front desk area stocked with up-to-date information for volunteers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with MS Office.
- Previous customer service experience preferred.
- Familiarity with retail sales and inventory procedures.
- Ability to learn and apply proper animal handling skills.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and communication skills.
- Ability to work with volunteers and co-workers in a professional manner.
This position requires standing for long periods. It requires the ability to stoop, bend, reach, and lift items weighing up to 50 pounds to a level of 4 feet high and handle dogs weighing up to 150 lbs.
