MAJOR FUNCTION
Skilled technical work within a comprehensive environmental control program. Responsible for the field collection of groundwater and surface water environmental samples. May oversee the work of other technicians in environmental monitoring.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
Environmental Technician I:
- Operates light and medium vehicles and outboard motorboats in addition to scientific field equipment such as water samplers, dissolved oxygen meters, conductivity meters, pH meters, depth meters and sediment dredges.
- Keeps records of work performed.
- Records water sample quality and quantity data.
- Continually updates and maintains various information logs/records associated with water sampling.
- Assists with investigations of water quality and quantity complaints.
- Assists chemist in laboratory by washing glassware or preparing samples for analysis.
- Upholds requirements of the lab’s Ethics and Data Integrity statement in all work.
- Follows procedures established by the lab’s Quality Systems, Standard Operating Procedures, and Document Control.
- Performs related work as required.
Environmental Technician II (in addition to Environmental Technician I duties):
- Makes field trips to various locations to collect surface and ground water samples.
- Standardizes and calibrates all assigned meters and sampling equipment to ensure readings are correct for running basic water sampling tests.
- Prepares monthly schedule for sampling projects.
- Investigates water quality and quantity complaints and provides information to the public.
- Prepares, completes and oversees the maintenance of various related records and reports.
- Assists chemist in laboratory by running basic wet chemistry tests, washing glassware, and preparing samples for analysis.
Environmental Technician III (in addition to Environmental Technician I and II duties):
- Primarily responsible for acting as a lead worker of a field water sampling team, driving and operating light/medium vehicles, outboard motorboats, and all-terrain vehicles
- Continually updates and maintains various information logs/records associated with water sampling. Enters data into computerized database. Reviews data entry for accuracy.
- Responsible for performing simple field repairs of equipment.
- Provides general and preventive maintenance of equipment, boats, and assigned vehicles (i.e.: washes, cleans, polishes and makes minor repairs to equipment).
- Reports difficult or unusual situations to supervisor.
- Assist supervisor with inventorying, ordering, maintaining, and storing supplies including various chemicals.
- Provides verbal employee performance information to supervisor.
- Assists in training new environmental technicians.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Environmental Technician I:
- Knowledge of basic chemistry.
- Ability to learn the principles, practices, techniques and instruments used in water sampling and laboratory testing equipment.
- Ability to operate outboard motorboats.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and the public.
- Ability to see, ambulate independently, drive, bend, stoop, sit and stand. Ability to sit for long periods.
- Ability to drive from work site to work site.
- Ability to complete records, forms and reports as required.
- Ability to perform tasks that require eye and hand coordination.
- Ability to perform prolonged and arduous physical work under adverse conditions, including the lifting of up to forty-five (45) pounds and carrying that weight for short distances.
- Ability and agility to perform various labor tasks in all weather conditions (i.e.: sun, rain, cold).
- Ability to swim
Environmental Technician II (in addition to Environmental Technician I "knowledge, abilities, and skills"):
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques and instruments used in water sampling and laboratory testing equipment
- Knowledge to judge readings of water samples.
- Knowledge of map reading and interpretation.
Environmental Technician III (in addition to Environmental Technician I and II “knowledge, abilities, and skills”):
- Ability to sit for long periods
- Ability to make handwritten notes
- Ability to think and react calmly and responsively to emergency situations.
- Ability to recognize incorrect information or work and make remedial actions independently.
- Ability to work independently.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to learn and operate assigned equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Environmental Technician I:
- Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma. Must have course work in biology, chemistry or related environmental sciences.
- Must have a basic understanding of chemistry, biology, and environmental systems.
- Must have experience with motorized boats.
- Must have a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment within this classification.
- A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Environmental Technician II:
- Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma. Must have course work in biology, chemistry or related environmental sciences.
- Must have a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in environmental field and/or laboratory work.
- Must have a basic understanding of chemistry, biology, and environmental systems.
- Must have experience with motorized boats.
- Must have a valid drivers’ license and be able to secure a valid Florida drivers’ license at the time of employment within this classification.
- A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Environmental Technician III:
- Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma. Must have course work in biology, chemistry or related environmental sciences.
- Must have a minimum of seven (7) years' experience in environmental field and/or laboratory work.
- Must have basic understanding of chemistry, biology, and environmental systems.
- Must have experience with motorized boats.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver’s license at the time of employment within this classification.
- A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to swim.
This position shall be required to report for work as directed when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
SPECIAL PREFERENCE
Environmental Technician III:
Completion of an approved environmental field sampling short course is preferred.
