The City of Aurora is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Director of Community Engagement.
The Director of Community Engagement will lead the City of Aurora’s efforts to foster trust, transparency, and collaboration between residents and local government. This leadership role will develop and implement strategic outreach initiatives, build grassroots relationships, and respond to concerns and priorities. The Director will work closely with city departments, alderpersons, community groups, and neighborhood leaders to ensure inclusive public engagement around key city initiatives, services, and decisions.
The duties of this position include but are not limited to: Design and implement a citywide community engagement strategy to ensure resident involvement in municipal decision-making; Lead community needs assessments to inform strategic planning; Serve as the liaison between residents, community-based organizations, neighborhood groups, and City Hall; Serve as administrator for all Mayoral-appointed board and commissions; Develop systems for capturing and responding to resident feedback; Develop partnerships with schools, faith-based organizations, tenant associations, local nonprofits, and advocacy groups; Lead community-wide initiatives as determined by the Mayor’s Office; Represent the City at public events, ward meetings, and civic; Collaborate with City departments to ensure marginalized communities are represented in civic processes; Oversee the Community Engagement team; Other duties as assigned.
This position requires a bachelor’s degree in public administration, social work, community development, political science, or related field; master’s degree preferred. This position also requires a minimum of five (5) years in community organizing, public engagement, or a related field, preferably in a government or nonprofit setting. Bilingual or multilingual skills are highly desirable (especially Spanish). Ability to work evenings and weekends to attend community meetings and events as needed. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Must successfully pass pre-hire requirements including but not limited to City Council appointment, physical, drug screen, and background check.
This is a full-time, executive position. The salary range is $111,841.60 - $150,363.60 with starting rate dependent on experience and qualifications, but in most cases is no higher than the midpoint of the range.
