Job Description:

We are seeking a Derivatives Negotiation Lawyer to join our growing team and support client engagements focused on trading documentation for leading financial institutions, hedge funds, and asset managers. This role is ideal for a mid-level attorney or seasoned negotiator with hands-on experience negotiating and advising on derivatives-related agreements. The successful candidate will contribute to high-volume negotiations in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment and provide legal and commercial insight on risk, collateral, and documentation strategy. Preference will be given to candidates located in the New York City area to accommodate occasional on-site client needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Negotiate and advise on a wide range of trading agreements including ISDA Master Agreements and Credit Support Annexes (CSAs), MSFTAs, MRAs (for repo transactions), and GMSLAs (securities lending agreements).
  • Draft and review legal documentation in support of OTC derivatives and prime brokerage relationships.
  • Advise internal stakeholders on regulatory, netting, and collateral implications of trading documentation.
  • Support onboarding and documentation processes with counterparties in coordination with legal, risk, and compliance functions.
  • Help maintain playbooks, templates, and documentation standards in line with current market practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage complex workflows involving negotiation status tracking and escalations.
  • Stay current on regulatory developments impacting derivatives documentation (e.g., EMIR, Dodd-Frank, UMR).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • JD or equivalent and active bar admission.
  • At least 3 years of experience negotiating ISDA Master Agreements and related trading documents.
  • Knowledge of collateral mechanics, netting provisions, and margin requirements in derivative contracts.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple counterparties and documents concurrently.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a hybrid or remote setting.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with MRAs, GMSLAs, MSFTAs, and prime brokerage agreements.
  • Familiarity with legal and regulatory frameworks including Dodd-Frank, EMIR, and UMR.
  • Background supporting hedge funds, investment banks, or asset managers.
  • Located in the NYC area or open to occasional on-site work as needed.

Compensation, Benefits & Location:

This role offers a range of competitive compensation starting at $145,000, and a highly competitive benefits package in the alternative legal services marketplace that includes health benefits, 401k, and more. Axiomites also get access to professional development tools and resources and learning and development programs.
