Job Summary

To support the day-to-day management of the Investment Management and Portfolio management team. The Junior Investment analyst will assist the portfolio manager on providing Macro analysis, Asset Allocation insights and Portfolio Construction. The role will also include involvement in ongoing quantitative and qualitative research on externally managed global funds, investment strategies and structured solutions. He/she will contribute towards the preparation of Investment papers material for different Investment Committees.

Job Description

Management of client accounts

  • Providing support to the investment team on asset allocation, portfolio construction, tactical trading strategies, bonds, mutual fund and ETFs selection, and trade execution.
  • Perform analysis and implement investment strategies from the Absa Wealth Open architecture platform which will include the following asset classes/Legal structures: Mutual Funds, ETF, Public Equities, Money Markets, Global Fixed Income, Structured Products, Alternative Investments (Private Equity/Debt, Real Estate, Funds of Hedge Funds), Liquid Alternatives, Quantitative Investment Strategies (QIS), Multi-Asset Strategies
  • Assistance in designing investment guidelines for discretionary mandates.
  • Analyzing Macro, Geopolitical, Market events and its impact of client portfolios.
  • Analyzing large set of data from Bloomberg and other public databases
  • Analyzing and monitoring portfolio risks, performance.
  • Provide assistance in delivering client reports and client inquires on investment strategies.
  • Researching new product ideas and investment strategies based on client risk tolerance, investment horizon and liquidity requirements.
  • Working closely with the technology team to enhance our portfolio management systems and infrastructure.
  • Prepare investment reports, newsletter, client pitch books and marketing materials.
  • Ensure client receive Investment reports in line with service level agreement.
  • Provide regular update to client with respect to their Investment Portfolio.
  • Develop innovative strategies to outperform client’s benchmark.


Asset Management Investment Process

  • Participate in the asset management investment process by conducting company research (attend financial results presentations, site visits, etc.) on individually listed shares and ETFs, mutual funds and decide whether to buy/not buy/hold/sell the company  shares  for  the various portfolios that incorporate equities.
  • Conduct research on other traditional and alternative asset classes (Equities, Bonds, REITS, Commodities, Private Markets, Hedge Funds, money market, preference shares) to include or exclude them from client portfolios.
  • Prepare and design investment guidelines for Discretionary mandates.
  • Provide input and insights into investment strategy meetings, fund manager selection, strategic and tactical asset allocation meetings and other relevant investment forums.
  • Understand clients’ risk appetite and investment guidelines.
  • Monitor and report on client portfolio performance

Business Development 

  • Provide bottom-up feedback through regular contact with clients.
  • Visit and present service offerings to potential clients; tailor- make and provide investment solutions to clients.
  • Contribute towards the development of new investment offerings for clients by identifying client needs; ascertain what's available in the market and structure new product offerings or service for clients using both internal and external resources.
  • Execute business development activities within the parameters of the agreed Service Level Agreements (SLA)

Mandatory Risk and Control objective

  • Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with regulatory requirements, Enterprise Wide Risk Management Framework and internal Absa Policies and Policy Standards.
  • Understand and manage risks and risk events (incidents) relevant to the role

Role/Person Specification

Preferred Education & Preferred Experience:

  • Bachelor in a Business/Finance/Financial Mathematics degree and/or working towards Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charter
  • Min 3 year of experience in financial markets and dealing with investment clients.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Understanding of Risk Management frameworks within Fund management activities including policies & guidelines as applicable
  • Strong Entrepreneur mind set / business development
  • Professional Presentation Skills including excellent technical writing skills
  • Presentable to clients with outstanding articulation
  • Strong Persuasive & Relationship building skills
  • Understanding of Global Financial Markets / Global Economics / Geopolitical events
