Position Description
Transportation Engineer Tech I
Performs basic design work and calculations. Performs field work; uses automated systems. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer and registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Transportation Engineer Tech II
- Performs intermediate design work and calculations; performs field work; uses automated systems and learns specialized procedures.

- projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the
- supervisor.
A Day in the life of a Design Technician I or II may include:
- Drafting designs
- Field investigation
- Plan review
- Creating funding proposals
- Providing status updates on projects with TxDOT Leadership
- Meeting with subject matter experts on plans and designs
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Transportation Engineer Tech I Experience: No experience required. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Transportation Engineer Tech II Experience: 2 YEARS Drafting, design, plan preparation (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)
Transportation Engineer Tech I and II Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate.
Transportation Engineer Tech I Competencies:
Basic Roadway Design
- Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
Higher Mathematics
- Performing basic design and drafting
- Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
- Follow verbal and written instructions
Transportation Engineer Tech II Competencies (in addition to Transportation Engineer Tech I):
- Advanced and specialized design/drafting procedures
- Interactive graphic and design information systems
Performing Intermediate Drafting
- Training in a classroom, office, or field environment
Transportation Engineer Tech I and II Physical Requirements:
- Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
- Subject to noise
- Subject to vibration
- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
- Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
- Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
- Talking expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
- Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
- Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
- Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
